In 1912 Cheng was born in Shanghai .His father worked well in business and the family was rather rich so that Cheng could study in Mailun Academy in Britain. Cheng showed great talent in sports at his young age. As he played "catch the prisoner" game with his friends, Cheng can always win whether he was the "on" or "prisoner".

In the 1930s Cheng Jinguan and many sports fans established Baihong track team in Shanghai. They often competed with Shanghai alien . In early October, Shanghai Hongkou park was full of people. All along, a few days ago, a poster which claimed a competition between Baihong and another foreign team attracted their attention. On the race day, the park gathered thousands of audience. Cheng Jinguan is a typical "game" type player, the more the audience are, the more excited he will be. This time, he participated in the 100 m and 200 m competitions. Despite that Cheng was very confident, when he stood on the start line of the 100-meter race, the audience can't help whispering. After all, Cheng was only 1.60 meters tall, and beside him stood a tall and strong foreigner, just like an iron tower. On the runway, Cheng left sneer behind, just like an arrow flied to the end. Without any question,he won the first and was immediately surrounded by all, some incredibly happy to tears. The result of the game was 10.6 seconds, improving the 100 meters record by 0.1 seconds. Earlier, the national record holder was Liu Changchun. However, being no formal game, Cheng's result was not acknowledged. But after that, his name and Liu tied for together.

In 1935 when Cheng Jinguan studied economics in Suzhou soochow university, he received a notice: to train in Qingdao, Shangdong and participate in the 1936 Berlin games audition. Unfortunately, because of the sickness, Cheng continued not to go there, which made his friend and competitor Liu Changchun very vexatious. So, Liu wrote a lot of letters to him and finally he went Qingdao. After the training in Qingdao, he attended the election, choosing the first in separate items as the athlete to participate in the Olympic games, in Shanghai. He had also made an assumption with Liu that he took part in the 100m race, Liu in the 400m race and made every effort to win the first in their own item. Unfortunately, twenty-four year old Cheng failed accidentally. In order to achieve the chance to attend Berlin Olympic Games, he signed up in the 400m hurdle and succeeded at last. At the same time, he broke the nation record with the good grade of 58’3 seconds.

Although he won the qualification of attending the Olympic games, he was worried about the money to go to Berlin. However, the son of Jiang Jieshi took him to Zhenjiang, the capital of Jiangsu Province and helped him ask the Superintendent of Public Instruction for money, enabling him to went to the competition.

The Olympic Feeling
Son accomplish the dream for father

Yellow of old photos, the ink and wash on the walls ,all the things in Chengs’ house show the brilliant history about Cheng Jinguan. Cheng Jinguan has attended the 11th Olympic Games held in Berlin in 1936. The old photos and documents which witnessed this history have been treasured by BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games). Cheng Yulin is one of the sons of Cheng Jinguan, and Cheng Weiwei is Cheng Yulin’s daughter. Cheng Yulin graduated from Nanjing physical culture institute (南京体院), and had been the team leader of Nanjing Zhongshan Gate sports battalion before he retired. He has lots of students all over the world. What’s more, Cheng Weiwei is working for Chinese football at Nanjing football association. The black and white photo about Cheng Jinguan and Owens, remind people of many things 76 years ago. One morning, Cheng Jinguan was attracted by the beautiful hurdles posture done by black athletes when he passed the stadium in front of the dormitory. Cheng got along well with one of the black athletes because he could speak English fluently. The black athlete called Jesse Owens, who achieved four gold medals during that Olympic Games and gave lots of advice on sprint technical problems. In order to save money, The Chinese delegation reached Berlin by sea rather than by train. The long distance journey made Cheng Jinguan and his teammates exhausted, so they got nothing in Berlin. An newspaper in Singapore drawn an big egg to satire the Chinese delegation. Born in a wrong time was their dreams of recollections. Cheng Jinguan had have an attempt for Olympic bid, unfortunately he didn’t succeed at that time. In order to accomplish father’s dream, his son – Cheng Yulin took over the mission “Patriotism, love of family” are the words Cheng Yulin used to assess his father. “Dad was in a wealth family. He gave up to inheriting the family business and embarked on the road of hard sports. The only reason was to achieve a medal in Olympics and break the conventional image of Chinese -- Sick man of Asia.” Cheng Yulin talked about his father with full of respect. “National Hing Hing Sports”, Cheng Jinguan made contributions silently for Olympic bid at his old ages.

Children’s education shown father’s love. Cheng Jinguan was so happy that Cheng Yulin also embarked on the road of sports. When Cheng Yulin received the notice that his father were dying, he rushed to see his father the last time. To his surprise, the last word Cheng Jinguan said was to ask the result of the competition held in Europe. Over the years, father’s ask has become Cheng Yulin’s power to work hard. Cheng Jinguan died on May 1, 2001. Two months later, Juan Antonio Samaranch announced China's successful in Olympic bid in Moscow. In his lifetime, Cheng Jinguan has talked to his son that he wanted to Beijing to watch Olympics in 2008. His biggest wishes was to see our national flag rising in the stadium. But it was a pity that the old man had no chance to realise his dream.
