Pronounciation

edit

can someone please indicate how to pronounce his name? I've seen him in concert and i still don't know. Many articles have IPA symbols regarding pronunciation, e.g. Messiaen, and some even have spoken clips of someone pronouncing the name.--Jkisch 14:00, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The german wikipedia had a ipa --Atamari 16:08, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, the german one is correct. I'll edit it there :) --Yaamboo 21:07, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would have thought that [jusu nˈduʁ] is just the pronunciation of his name, not a French pronunciation in particular. Davidships (talk) 20:50, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Moreover, Rolling Stone's bio of Youssou N'Dour doesn't live anywhere on its website. Maybe we're lucky, and there's a mirror? Terrible shame otherwise. :( 74.199.0.69 (talk) 20:33, 1 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Language?

edit

Does he sing in Serer, Wolof, or something else entirely? 109.246.254.186 (talk) 14:20, 12 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mainly Wolof, French and English. He has done a special Serer edition of some album in the past though. Which brings to mind that I still have to see a complete discography of his works, including albums that have not been published outside of Senegal. --Yaamboo (talk) 17:13, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Is "Wake Up" English and Wolof, then? 75.142.253.243 (talk) 18:58, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

In 2008, N'Dour was invited to serve as a mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, an international philanthropic programme that pairs masters in their disciplines with emerging talents for a year of one-to-one creative exchange. Out of a very gifted field of candidates, N'Dour chose Aurelio Martínez, a Garifuna from Honduras, as his protégé.[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by RMP2014 (talkcontribs) 13:25, 12 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

N'Dour and 9/11

edit

The last sentence in the Politics section is, I believe, a misinterpretation of the cited source and should be removed. Here is what is actually said: 'I thought it was just private spiritual music for me and my family to listen to. Then I played it to my manager, and my record company. They wanted to put it out right away. But for me it was too close to 11 September. I didn't want it to be seen as a response to that. It's a very personal record. I didn't want it to be touched by politics.'

None the less, N'Dour is quoted in the album's notes as saying: 'Islam has been badly used by a certain ideology.' I wonder whether he means Bush's demonisation or bin Laden's Wahabbist ultra-orthodoxy. 'I'm not at a high level of Islam,' N'Dour says, tactfully withdrawing. 'I'm a modern Muslim. I pray, and if I have a question, I ask someone who is more educated in the religion than me. But for me bringing religion into politics is wrong, and it shouldn't be necessary to kill even one person in the cause of Islam.' — Preceding unsigned comment added by OldExpat (talkcontribs) 02:05, 5 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wolof POV pushing by User:Jolofman

edit

In this interview, Youssou was asked why Lantino music was not featured in his new album (at the time of the interview). He replied:

Well, when I started out in the music world Latin-style sounds were really taking off in Senegal. But I was interested in forging my own style with mbalax and traditional Wolof rhythms. I love Latino music, but the thing is I didn't grow up with that culture. What's more, I'm not used to singing in Spanish! And if there's one thing I hate, it's when people turn away from their own music and start dishing up Latino sounds just because it happens to be the 'big thing' of the moment!

User:Jolofman however decided to mistrepresented this by changing our original article from:

N'Dour helped develop a style of popular Senegalese music known by all Senegambians (including the Wolof) as mbalax, a genre that have sacred origins in the Serer[1][2] music njuup tradition and ndut initiation ceremonies."[1][2]

to:

N'Dour helped develop a style of popular Senegalese music known by all Senegambian as mbalax, a genre that have sacred origins in the Wolof[3]

@Jolofman: also removed Youssou's Serer and Tocouleur ethnic heritage and just left Wolof despite the fact that the source he cited state clearly that his father was Serer origin and his mother of Toucouleur origin. The editor has a habit or removing sourced content and inserting his POV as seen on his talkpage. Senegambianamestudy (talk) 23:31, 29 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
