Yevgeni Babich → Evgeny Babich (Yevgeny Babich) – "Yevgeni" isn't a common spelling, so it has sense to make the name grammatically right. Cybervoron (talk) 16:49, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose – Changing the name of the article just because the spelling given isn't a common one makes no sense, assuming the spelling "Yevgeni" is supported by sources. However, the source provided in the article gives his name as "Yevgeny Babich", so I would suggest any move would be to Yevgeny Babich. – PeeJay 09:57, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Evgeny", "Evgeni", "Yevgeni", "Yevgeny", and probably a slew of other variants I'm forgetting, are all "correct"; they are merely transliteration variations. For any particular person, we should be using the variant that's prevalent in the (English-language) sources covering that person, and if there is none (or if various variants are equally used), then use "Yevgeny", as that's actually the variant which applying WP:RUS mentioned by the nominator would result in.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); April 28, 2015; 12:14 (UTC)
- In the English-language sources his name hadn't a stable spelling, but in his passport the name is Evgeny, not "Evgeni", "Yevgeni", "Yevgeny", etc. Cybervoron (talk) 16:35, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- WP:RUS is not based on the Russian passport system (which is not aimed specifically at Anglophones anyway); it is based on BGN/PCGN romanization. Not to mention that we hardly are in a position to check passports of every person the English spelling of whose names we are in doubt of!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); April 28, 2015; 16:57 (UTC)
- Ok, my mistake. The rules of Russian passport system are universal, so you don't need to check the passport of every person. But "Yevgeni" or "Evgeni" is incorrect in any case, and doesn't used commonly in the sources. So, at least it should be moved to "Yevgeny Babich". Cybervoron (talk) 18:34, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
- I still don't really agree with the reasoning behind labeling other spellings "incorrect" (not to mention the fact that the passport translit rules changed at least three times in just the last few years; my own featured two different spellings for no sane reason :)), but it's a moot point.
