Taxonomy

Some authors claim a number of subspecies that should possibly be mentioned.

• S. v. varius the typical form of Yellow-bellied Sapsucker found during the breeding from Pennsylvania north and west through Canada.
• S. v. atrothorax (common name?) breeding from Pennsylvania south in the Appalachians to Virginia
• S. v. appalachiensis, Appalachian Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a disjunct subspecies restricted to the high elevations of the southern Appalachians

Names of species

The names of species are all common nouns, and "yellow-bellied sapsucker" and all other birds is a common noun, likewise. For good examples of the names of species of animals, see these:
aardvark, bald eagle, cat, dog, elephant, fox, goat, gnu, hawk, horse, impala, javelina, kangaroo, llama, lion, mink, moose, narwhal, ocelot, panther, porcupine, puma, sea lion, swallow, tiger, tortoise, vampire bat, wombat, yellowhammer, zebra.
If you don't consider some of these to be species, don't fuss about it. I am sure that you can find replacements.

The yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) is a medium-sized woodpecker which is found across Canada, eastern Alaska and the northeastern United States. These birds winter in the eastern United States, West Indies and Central America. They have also been found as a very rare vagrant in Ireland and Great Britain. The yellow-bellied sapsucker has a length of around 20 centimetres and an average weight of around 50 grams, with a wingspan that ranges from 34 to 40 centimetres. The forehead is coloured bright red in the male (and very occasionally yellow), and a lighter shade of red in the female. This male was photographed in Central Park, New York City, United States.

Careers

This being today's featured picture, it would be awesome if someone could find a way to link in Careers, which is where I at least heard of this bird. At some point in the play you may "spot a yellow-bellied sapsucker", which gives you Happiness points. We all thought it was such a funny name; it sticks with you. There's even a Reddit thread about the game which claims that under certain "house rules" the "true winner" of the game is the first to spot the yellow-bellied sapsucker.
