This site delivers the standard company line (government line in this case) that the town of Yallourn was demolished because the coal underneath it was required for the local power station. But it's closure was surrounded by considerable controversy. It was pointed out by many that there is almost unlimited coal between where the township stood and the coast near Sale. The need for the coal was never reason enough on its own. It's clear that the ongoing cost of maintaining the ageing company town was also highly relevant.

More recent developments have suggested that some within the SEC already realised the risk and future liabilities associated with the asbestos used heavily throughout the town, and wanted to minimise that aspect of its operations too.

I'm trying to compose some wording to satisfactorily reflect these issues in the article. Roblowe48 (talk) 10:18, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

No evidence for unincorporated status edit

It is true that the Yallourn Works Area was formerly an unincorporated area, and it appears as such on various out of date maps which I hope to be able to reference. However I have found no evidence that area retained its unincorporated status following the 1994-5 LGA reforms. The article and Template:Local Government Areas of Victoria should be amended. Indeed; I've removed this info. — This, that and the other (talk) 11:43, 28 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
