Content forking edit

Since there is already an article on the Yaghnobi people and another article on the Yaghnob River, this article, which discusses both, represents a content fork. I suggest that the various sections be merged to their respective pages, and that this page (being the name of a geographical feature) be redirected to Yaghnob River. No this is about the valley. Valid article. Dr. Blofeld 21:56, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

With all due respect, the valley and its river are essentially the same geographical feature. The people of the valley are already discussed in a separate article. By retaining this article, we have a content fork, which is undesirable. Please do not remove the merge tag until consensus on this matter is achieved. Hi, the article is intended to be about the area known as Yagnob Valley, and hopefully about its geography, history and the environmental and developmental challenges it faces, but not about the Yagnob River. The Yagnob Valley is the name given to a mountainous area in North Eastern Tajikistan, near to the source of the Yagnob river (which continues to run for 130km beyond Yagnob Valley) and I feel it should be treated as a different entity to the river that runs through it. I am attempting to add a map to the article, that will hopefully clarify this!

I understand that there are also existing articles on the Yagnobi People and Yagnobi Language, but feel that there is need for an article on Yagnob Valley itself, as a geographical area, a site of particular scientific and geologic interest, and the homeland of a unique - and endangered- ethnic group.

I wonder if there are any changes that can be made to the Yagnob Valley article (or, indeed, the Yagnob River article, which seems to just be a stub) that would prevent a "content fork". Richard henly (talk) 00:00, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm incredulous that the editor who placed the merge tag on this page has readded it and somehow thinks this article is going to attract scores of editors. Major valley articles are valid as seperate articles. Analysis of the geological/formations etc should be written in aside from info on the river and the people. How many articles do we have on valleys on wikipedia? A lot. If there was consensus that they weren't accpetable and to merge them all into their respective river articles we wouldn't have any. Dr. Blofeld 08:45, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm equally incredulous that an experienced editor would simply delete the merge tag without a word of discussion on the matter. I don't expect "scores of editors" -- the opinions of three or four will do.
As Dr. Blofeld points out, articles about valleys are perfectly valid. Discussions of the unique geology, flora and fauna of such regions can be quite enlightening. Unfortunately, this article has none of that. It has a discussion of the history of the region and the people who inhabit it -- material that is already covered at Yaghnobi people. This article's entire purpose appears to be to present 1) the history of the Yaghnobi people and 2) the present efforts to preserve the valley as a homeland for those people. All of that is perfectly valid content for the encyclopedia, but at the existing article. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:14, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

The article is intended to be about the region known as Yagnob Valley in Tajikistan. I know that the article is far from perfect, but I understand that it can be edited and improved by other contributors. I feel quite strongly that there is a place for an article on this area of Tajikistan on Wikipedia, and think it would be wrong for it to be merged with Yagnob River or Yagnobi People - two different topics entirely. (That would be like merging an article on London with an article on The Thames, or an article on the English with an article on the UK. Rather defeats the object of an encyclopedia...) I believe Richard Henly is being rather disingenuous when he states that the article was intended to be about a region and its geography and such. Mr Henly is the original author of the article and is almost single-handedly responsible for its current contents. If he had intended an article on a region from its geographic and geologic viewpoints, that is the article he would have written. The article he did write was about the people and the resettlement efforts. Mr Henly is free to rewrite the article to cover the unique geography of the region, if such material is available. That still does not address the issue that any content in this article that refers to the inhabitants of the valley should be removed from this article and merged as appropriate into the Yaghnobi people article. Yes, I see your point WikiDan61, and will endeavour to write more about the geography of the region, and remove some of the references its inhabitants (within reason). The article is new, and I hope that other contributors will be able to add more in depth information to it over time. I do maintain that it is a valid article, and a topic worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia. I would greatly appreciate the "merge tag" being removed from the article again. I am a new contributor to Wikipedia, so any tips or more constructive comments are very welcome. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard henly (talkcontribs) 20:14, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'll remove the merge tag when I see that this discussion has concluded with a consensus move the appropriate material to Yaghnobi people or to keep it here. Your assertion that you will remove material "as appropriate" strikes me as not having quite reached that consensus yet. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 20:18, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiDan61 – I will move appropriate material to "Yagnob people" and give "Yagnob Valley" a more geographical leaning tomorrow. Thanks for your help Richard henly (talk) 22:08, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have contacted WikiProject Tajikistan to request help with expanding and improving the article, and hopefully providing more in depth information, photos and maps. Richard henly (talk) 21:45, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Merge template removed. Article seems to be taking shape nicely about the region rather than the people. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 12:08, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

photos, maps and further information edit

Photos and a map would be much appreciated addition to this article if anyone has any! Likewise any information on the fascinating geology of the Yagnob Valley area! Richard henly (talk) 22:04, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
