I'd like to point out that this disorder "xylophagia" can potentially be a gateway to other more severe pica related eating disorders that I don't find listed on wikipedia such as eating plastics and (although they say something about body parts) the uncontrollable eating of fingernails, scabs, and any other surface sheddings.

I added this:

"Also, some schoolchildren tend chew their own pencils. This is likely caused by the desire to find some stimulation when they are bored."

Is this ok to add? I don't mean it to be humourous or anything... It just is that way.

I wouldn't think it to be relevant (and it looks to have been deleted anyway). Eating large amounts of wood != chewing a pencil.24.116.11.11 02:29, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I think the whole pencil-chewing thing is not so much to do with the fact that the pencil is made of wood but that the pencil is something that can easily be sucked on as part of an oral psychological fixation, so to speak.
