Citation? edit

"The people of Wuppertal know it, however, as the “Old Lady” ("Alte Dame") or the “Steel Dragon” (“Der stählerne Drache”)."

Where does this come from? It's not mentioned in the german article, and one Wuppertal woman I asked, had never heard of these names. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.47.48.249 (talk) 16:56, 2 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

search german google.de for "alte dame" wuppertal, gives e.g. http://www.dooyoo.de/sehenswuerdigkeiten-national/schwebebahn-wuppertal/768237/ , http://www.beepworld.de/members20/julia42/meinestadt.htm and 4000 other links. --79.233.31.157 (talk) 17:44, 7 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Tea card picture! edit

There's a nice little picture of the schwebebahn on a Brooke Bond tea picture card here:

We probably can't use it because of copyright, but i thought people might like to see it.

Alice in den Stadten edit

In the article, it says that the characters in the movie Alice in den Stadten "use images of the Schwebebahn" - but they aren't really "using images", they are riding the Schwebebahn. The film shows the train leaving one of the terminus stations, travelling over the river, and shows the characters riding inside the train. The film has an interesting shot from inside showing the train leaving the station, and an incredible screeching sound as the train is going around a curved section of track. - user in japan —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.130.19.15 (talk) 23:06, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

>> The article seems to be written by a German native speaker, not very skilled in English. German only know one word for "of" and "from". In speaking one can distinguish the different meanings by using different grammicatical endings (Fälle). Here someone maybe just translated badly as can be seen on other spots. Anonymous User Smarty

Technical definition: monorail - suspension rail - tram - train edit

The Wuppertaler Schwebebahn ("Wuppertal Schwebebahn", grammatically is wrong), has characteristics of a monorail and of a suspended train. It was named one-rail-system and floating tram by businessman & engineer Eugen Langen, because untill that time transport per rail was done on two-rail systems, constructed on the ground. According to the exact technical definition of monorail, the Schwebebahn doesnt fit in that definition. Because, as I'm informed, the electrical power comes from a separate cable and not from the rail. (The Dresden Schwebebahn is something different because it is being moved by a separate cable, powered from the mountain station)

Translating the German word "Bahn" in this case is rather difficult: the word is used for path / road, in railsystem (Eisenbahn), road (Fahrbahn ), and for the actual wagon-combination train, tram or metro. While the wagons of the Schwebebahn are light and not chained in long rows, the Schwebebahn wagons fit in the definition of tram much better than in train.

So to stick as much as possible to the German wordings and its meaning, using the characterics one-rail (not single rail), suspended / suspension, elevated, floating and tram seem to be the best. Anonymous User Smarty

Original Naming edit

According to an 1894 memorandum from the factory of Eugen Langen, I found on the internet, the official name at that time was Anlage einer elektrischen Hochbahn (Schwebebahn), System Eugen Langen Köln translated literally Electrical Highway(meaning elevated railway-railroad) Installation (Floating Tram), System Eugen Langen Cologne.[1]

No sources are mentioned for the official name as written in the article. A reference to the German Article isn't that valuable because the German article is lacking sources as well. Can somebody explain or add sources? Wenn not, I will change the official naming. Anonymous User Smarty

The naming convention is important. If this is, broadly, an elevated railway, it can not claim to be the oldest elevated railwoway in use. the Chicago Loop is older. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.14.180.227 (talk) 17:32, 1 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I believe this is both original research and simply a misunderstanding of the linked document. That talks about “Construction of a …”, German “Anlage einer …”, which of course doesn’t mean that the name of the railway includes “Anlage …”. I can’t find the linked document anyway, and it should be “…betreffend der Anlage…” (Genitive case), which makes the reference even less trustworthy. I’ve boldly edited to the official name from DE. Would this be classed as rapid transit? edit

Pros: It is electrified & runs at a high frequency

Cons: It is not heavy rail Dr. British12 (talk) 16:53, 17 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Probably yes. The Schwebebahn resembles the heavy-rail subway systems of Berlin and Hamburg much more than the light-rail "Stadtbahn" networks of other cities, as the Schwebebahn is completely independent from other traffic. -- Typical light-rail networks in Germany started as streetcar networks, which were complemented with right-of-way and underground sections since the 1960s. Still, they're often sharing lanes with other traffic. The most "typical" of those light-rail systems is probably the Cologne Stadtbahn, not far away from Wuppertal. Tuffi edit

"Tuffi, meaning 'waterdive' in Italian" - the theory that the elephant was named in Italian after the jump is not supported in the English or German "Tuffi" entry in Wikipedia. They both seem to imply the name was there before. I would say this is a hoax. Tuffi is simply a typical German baby slang word, similar to Bambi or Zotti or so.146.227.239.13 (talk) 17:19, 6 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Translation of "Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen" edit

The translation of "Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen" with "Eugen Langen Monorail Overhead Conveyor System" seems weird to me (native German speaker). The German term, as I understand it, means roughly "Single-Rail Hanging Railway according to the System of Eugen Langen" with the verb, prepositions and articles omitted. Especially the "conveyor system" seems off, because it implies to me that the train is propelled by elements in the guideway (instead of an on-board motor), which is not the case, and this implication is not present in the German term. I would prefer a translation like "Eugen Langen Hanging Monorail System".

Is there any source for the English term, preferably from the time the Schwebebahn was designed or opened (the German term sounds somewhat archaic today, so if the English term is archaic as well, it might explain my problems with it) Thomas5388 (talk) 13:06, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
