Lord Leverhulme

edit

I think Lord Leverhulme's house, gardens etc should come under Rivington rather than Winter Hill --jmb 22:12, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think it's worth mentioning here. Have reworded slightly. Lancsalot 15:59, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

History section

edit

The history section states that "(t)he hill is believed to have been inhabited over 2,500 years ago, as a flint arrow head was found in the area that dated from that era," before pointing out that "(s)everal Bronze Age burial mounds have been located also." Should this be 2,500 BC rather than 2,500 years ago? Theelf29 15:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Murphy Incident

edit

Why is the Murphy Incident linked to the Men in Black page where there is no mention of it? Richerman (talk) 13:02, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

On second thoughts I've removed it all as I can't find any reference to it on the web either so it looks like someone made it up. Extraodinary claims need extraordinary proof! Richerman (talk) 13:12, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've found a reference now and reverted the edit but removed the link to the MIB page. Richerman (talk) 17:29, 28 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Update on mapit site that this was actually a hoax - http://www.mapit.kk5.org/#/a-winter-hill-ufo/4545267478

"The most enlightning information regarding this case came to me this year (2010), from a friend who informed me that the incident was fake and hoxed by other investigators in an attempt to waste my time and effort. This came as no surprise. I have heard of such things happening to other investigators. If the case is in fact a hoax, then it would have had to have been carried out by those involved in the subject to fool me time and time again. Why certain people think its funny to waste your time and effort, also considering expense, is beyond me. If this incident never took place, some interesting things still came to light and Winter Hill continues to have numerous UFO activity, and that's a fact!" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.224.113.189 (talk) 11:28, 23 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Refimprove tag

edit

I put a refimprove tag on this article only to have it removed the same day. The whole point of these tags is to alert the casual reader that the information may not be reliable and to, hopefully, get the article improved. I would be grateful if you would leave the tag there until proper references have been added to the article. Wikipedia articles should be made up of verifiable facts, not unsourced statements. Greater Manchester

edit

Just a note that Winter Hill lies on the boundary of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton and the Borough of Chorley and in this capacity is divided between Greater Manchester and Lancashire. The TV mast is on the Lancashire side of the boundary. Just thought this deserved a mention here as there has been a bit of confusion added in the article in the past. Boundaries are verified by using this from the Ordnance Survey. --Jza84 |  Talk  15:50, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wherever it is, it's not in Wigan. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.25.249.162 (talk) 17:30, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Musical pedantry

edit

Regarding the claim that the A Certain Ratio track features a "low pitched drone which alternates between two notes a whole tone apart for the entire length of the song" - having listened to this I just wanted to point out that the interval in the song is in fact a minor third - an interval one semitone larger than a whole tone. Can't comment on what interval the equipment on the hill produces though :) 194.24.251.17 (talk) 13:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
