Two William Fernies

edit

In the obituary of the other golfing William Fernie it says he "was responsible for laying out over 70 golf courses in Great Britain" (YPLI 27 Aug 1938) so my suspicion is that this whole section about golf course design relates to a different man and needs to go. The other William was also "a native of St Andrews" and died aged 75. In the obituary of William's wife in 1939 there is mention of a son "J S Fernie, London" who is the golfer John Sinclair Fernie (died 1959 aged 69). See http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/mullocks-specialist-auctioneers-and-valuers/catalogue-id-srmu10030/lot-41ac145a-132d-4739-81ed-a4510144f12b and https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9TV-F9Y John S withdrew from the 1924 Open on the death of Willie so perhaps was a relative of Willie.
