Any proof for this claim?--KoberTalk 10:25, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Can't imagine his friends walked up to him and said "Hello William Edward David"! -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:43, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Well said, but since when is Wikipedia naming policy based on "his-friends-say-so" principle? --KoberTalk 13:31, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's not. It's based on the common name principle. Which clearly wasn't William Edward David either. But here's a concrete reference: his obituary in The Times and his article in the DNB both refer to him as W. E. D. "Bill" Allen, and the latter also refers to him as Bill Allen and Bill. Usually pretty concrete. So either the proposed title or W. E. D. Allen would be acceptable. I would also suggest Bill Allen (traveller) or Bill Allen (historian), as this is how he's referred to in these two publications rather than as a politician. -- Necrothesp (talk) 18:11, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
