Talk:Wide Field Infrared Explorer

Notes edit

I worked on this and propose some corrections/additions, if anyone still cares. We built the dewar at Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center (ATC) in Palo ALto, CA. Space Dynamics did not build the core cryo-system. Worked with Amanda Mainzer from JPL who went on to work on the similar WISE program. Initial testing done at ATC as well as an offsite "explosive/hazardous" compound while testing the viability of using liquid Deuterium. Greg Bell consulting. As I remember it, we used "slush" Hydrogen, not solid as stated in the article. It may have meant to be solid in orbit but it never was while on the ground when I worked on it. Thanks. Have removed claim of cryo-system being built by SD for now. Rod57 (talk) 13:15, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

WIRE Part of Goldin's Faster, better, cheaper. edit

Could mention that WIRE (like JWST) was influenced by NASA Admin Dan Goldin's "Faster, Better, Cheaper" strategy/philosophy. The telescope that ate astronomy Nature 2010 - Rod57 (talk) 18:16, 30 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Intention to restructure edit

I hope one day to restructure this article to separate pre/post launch issues, and reduce duplication. - Rod57 (talk) 18:37, 30 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
