Original text:

A high rate of crime (compared to national average) is prevalent in the whitley council estate. This mainly is due to urban decay and not sufficient investment. However, Reading council has done a good job (according to many reports & reviews) of preventing these negative factors under difficult circumstances. Most insurance companies charge a very higher premium for cover, in certain parts of whitley, due to the high crime rate. However, it does not have the highest crime rate in Reading - Oxford Road, Reading area is the highest, (BBC Newsnight covered the crime rate problem in a program a few years ago).
One thing that may have gotten the crime to reduce notably are two men posing as the real-life Batman and Robin. Although taking the law into your own hands is illegal, these two men have secret identities and intimidate law-breakers.

I moved the text here (I originally removed it) as it is uncited. The only source referenced is that of Newsnight talking about Oxford road, but this is about Whitley. If sources can be found to back up these claims, please add them, but please do not simply add in uncited claims, as they can be removed as per WP:V Regards, MartinRe 21:33, 31 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I tried typing Whitley into the National Statistics database [[1]]. Whitley could certainly be characterised by high crime, high social deprivation etc. User:Merlin68

Whitley is one of the top 12% most deprived wards in the country. UK National Statistics [[2]] characterise the area as one of high unemployment, poor housing, poverty, deprivation, social exclusion and crime. Consequently, the challenges facing the area's schools are low self-esteem of children, limited aspirations, language deprivation, aggressive behaviour and health issues.
