A species description was published in 1904 by A. W. Milligan, Ptilotis novæ-norciæ, separating his specimen from eastern population of this species (Latham, 1801),^[1] The type location, Wongan Hills, is located in the southwest of Australia. This description is the basis for a generic combination of a subspecies, Nesoptilotis leucotis novaenorcia, citing the 2011 reevaluation.^[2]

The subspecific descriptions are^[3]

N. l. leucotis (Latham, 1801) occurs in southeast Australia
N. l. novaenorciae (Milligan, 1904), southwest to eastern central
N. l. thomasi (Mathews, 1912) Kangaroo Island (off south Australia)
