Talk:Whenuapai

I'm concerned with the lack of balance of the material being on Whenuapai Airport in the 2000s. There is no mention of adverse effects of proposed commercialisation which have caused substantial opposition. In addition the professional surveys quoted have been challenged by some due to probable bias in the survey methods. It appears to me that although done by professional companies, the survey results should be classed as original research and excluded from the article. Original research

I'm rather concerned at the tone of the material being added on Whenuapai Airport 1945-65. I'm not doubting its accuracy, but while it refers to the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Star, it is giving only the month and year, not the full date. If the date of the newspaper report is available, that should go in the article. My biggest concern is the following sentence:

From talking to various people who worked there at the time, and studying photos available at myaviation.net and airliners.net (keyword: Whenuapai); and other research I have concluded the following:

Unfortunately, that is certainly original research, and it is very suitable for any number of historical journals, but not for an encyclopaedia. Please read the link in the previous sentence, which explains the need for verifiability better than I can do.

I'm not sure where to go from here, as I'm reluctant to delete the hard work of the author, especially as I think it's very good work - it's just not quite right for Wikipedia.-gadfium 07:48, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. I take your point, and the paragraph you refer to IS original research; and therefore unsuitable The newspaper clippings did not come directly from the newpaper - they were sourced via the Auckland Scrapbook, and the New Zealand Scrapbook, both held by the Auckland Public Library. Others came from files held by the Auckland City Council Archive under the "Auckland Municipal Airport" file box. I will delete the paragraph containing the original research; and have replaced it with the sentence "Originally the airport had eight gates, but near the end of its life, aircraft were parked all over the tarmac, and DC-3s had to be parked on the grass beyond the TEAL hangar." As it happens, I am working on a book about Whenuapai when it was Auckland Airport during this period, and thought I would share a little of the research given with the public. Cultural Impact Assessment

I've added a Te Kawerau ā Maki Cultural Impact Assessment that talks about the traditional name for the area. The report requires Te Kawerau ā Maki permission for any of the information included to be used - I reached out over email and confirmed that it was fine to use this for the etymology. The report unfortunately includes a typo (Rawawaru), and I've confirmed that this should be Rarawaru, matching the name in the Treaty Settlement documents and in the NZ Gazetteer. --Prosperosity (talk) 00:38, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
