Image:Westernmailcover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Wales on Sunday

I presume that Wales on Sunday is the Sunday edition of the Western Mail, since that redirects to this page. But there's no mention of it in the article. Should there be? —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 04:44, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

North Wales

I was somewhat surprised at the claim in this article that the Western Mail is "not distributed in North Wales" - based solely, it seems, on a set of minutes from a local government lobbying group dating back to 2004.

Indeed, the latest ABC circulation report (available at www.abc.org.uk - direct linking not possible) for the Western Mail (dated August 2008) states the paper is available in "all of Wales and parts of England, including London, the South West and the Welsh Borders". This seems to be accurate, since I have seen it on sale not just in North Wales (specifically, Gwynedd), but also in Shrewsbury in the past couple of months.

Unless someone can come up with another source to say the paper is not distributed in North Wales, I am proposing this line be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.254.224.154 (talk) 16:09, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Aside from the WLGA most sources I've seen indicate that, at the very least, the paper doesn't have wide distribution in the north. Patrick Hannan makes the point in his 1999 book The Welsh Illusion: "north of Aberystwyth it has only token readership and everyone else who wants Welsh news buys the Liverpool-based Daily Post". A survey of public attitudes to the Welsh Assembly in 2008 said that "The Western Mail, Wales’ so-called national newspaper, has almost no impact in North Wales".[1] Pondle (talk) 16:59, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Happier with the article as it now stands. I'd move the statement further down the article, but perhaps that's just me. Don't confuse "distribution" and "circulation", which are both specific terms in newspaper sales. The Western Mail has fairly good distribution up North, as there are copies for sale in most newsagents and supermarkets. If we are referring to the WM's claim to be "the national newspaper of Wales" early on, then I think its relatively limited readership in North Wales is relevant in that context.Pondle (talk) 14:59, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Daniel Owen

There is a link in this article to Daniel Owen 1836-1895, the Welsh novelist, claiming he was at one time co-owner of the paper, unfortunately it is the wrong Daniel Owen. The Western Mail's Daniel Owen was Daniel Owen JP of Ash Hall Cowbridge (1829-1895) see DEATH OF MR DANIEL OWEN, in his other paper the Evening Express AlwynapHuw (talk) 13:50, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
