School project edit

This rather non-standard Wikipedia page (this version), with a lot of information which doesn't belong on the page for Weed Lake, was apparently created as part of a school project.^[1]^[2] It's great to see children being enthusiastic about the environment and about Wikipedia, but the article has now been edited (not by me) to remove a lot of material which really wasn't appropriate. The article would have been great as a website about the wetland, perhaps even on the school's own website, but in various ways it didn't really fit well into the encyclopedia. I have now edited the list to remove the references, which didn't refer to Weed Lake but provided information about the species. It is unfortunate that the students put so much effort into creating an article which is not appropriate for Wikipedia. It would have been wonderful as a local resource, perhaps attached to the school's website or a local community site, to provide information for visitors to the wetland. But within Wikipedia we do not need to provide information about a species at every location where it can be found: the essence of the encyclopedia is that links provide access to the information in other articles.

The list of species is now technically "unsourced", but I think the school's version of the article is an adequate source: if it had been appropriately located on a local community website, we would have treated it as a Reliable source.

I would love to think that some of the young students who worked on this article became excited about Wikipedia and now, six years on, are actively editing.
