This page should be renamed Water column edit

It is absurd to have different pages for lakes and oceans. scientists relate to the concept of water column in any type of water body. Just look at the incoming links to the disambig page! Even Brittanica has figured this one out. Anlace 04:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Water column - Hydraulic Head? edit

Is the measure of pressure under a water column similar or equal to that described as Hydraulic Head? CybergothiChé (talk) 15:28, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The different zones edit

What defines the different zones of the water column referred to in this article? Emilycalvin (talk) 20:54, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Apparently these are defined by different depth ranges. This is not really related to physical or biogeochemical fields or processes, hence not always useful. In most oceanographic research (including my own) we rather use terms like «(eu)photic zone»—typically defined as where light penetration is at least 1%[1]—, «mixed layer» and «compensation depth». The first term means literally the same as «epipelagic zone», but whereas the epipelagic layer is 200 m thick (by definition), the euphotic layer varies usually from metres to maybe 300 m.
