Proposed WikiProject
In my ongoing efforts to try to include every country on the planet included in the scope of a WikiProject, I have proposed a new project on Polynesia at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Polynesia whose scope would include Wallis and Futuna. Any interested parties are more than welcome to add their names there, so we can see if there is enough interest to start such a project. Thank you for your attention. Wallis and Futuna Scouting
Can someone render "Be Prepared", the Scout Motto, into ʻUvean and Futunan? Thanks! Chris 07:04, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Proposed merger with Futuna Island, Wallis and Futuna
I oppose the merge. Wallis and Futuna is a country (for some definitions of country), and Futuna is one of several islands which comprises it. Merging them makes no sense.-gadfium 00:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I agree with Gadfium. The Futuna article is too big to merge here without overwhelming this article with unnecessary detail; it's much better to keep it separate. -- Avenue 02:29, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- oppose-Wallis Island has its own article. Chris 22:57, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose. I agree: the other two main islands in the group have their own pages, and this is a fairly large article - we're not talking about a one-sentence stub here. Grutness...wha? 01:57, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
Parysaland, Mostajiria and Newport
"In 1917, the three traditional chiefdoms Parysaland, Mostajiria and Newport were annexed to France and turned into the Colony of Wallis and Futuna"
Is that a joke? There are no places with such names! 90.52.191.129 (talk) 00:07, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've reverted the edit which inserted these names. If you can point to a source which verifies the annexation in 1917, that would be helpful.-gadfium 00:36, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Wallis-et-Futuna
Shouldn't this be the French name? Mountleek (talk) 19:42, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- This is the English language Wikipedia. We don't title our articles on Germany as Deutschland, Italy as Italia, or Japan as 日本.-gadfium 03:59, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
- OK, but I was talking about the French name used in the first line (in the parentheses). I don't know much about French, nor anything about use of dashes in French, but take a look at the French Wikipedia. Mountleek (talk) 23:18, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think I understand you better now. You suggest that the infobox heading and first line of the article should refer to Collectivité de Wallis-et-Futuna instead of Territoire des îles Wallis et Futuna, since the former is the full name used on the French Wikipedia, or perhaps you suggest only that we should hyphenate the name. Most of the references I see on the internet do not hyphenate it, and the French Wikipedia is inconsistent with its use of hyphens. My French language skills are very poor, so I am not qualified to judge which of the full names is more appropriate. However, I do note that the Territoire name gets about 166,000 google hits, while the Collectivité name gets less than 5,000.-gadfium 00:19, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, now I see it's more complicated than I thought. Mountleek (talk) 21:25, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
- "Territoire" and "Collectivité" refer to the institutional status. Since the 2003 constitutional amendment, Wallis and Futuna has the status of Collectivité like French Polynesia or New Caledonia, and this is not a "territoire" anymore. This is one of the french legal complicated subtilities. Actually that means that Wallis and Futuna has a bit more of formal autonomy. Nevers (talk) 18:34, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Unaccredited in the state of Oregon
This receives a 'so what?' A French Polynesian University being unaccredited in a single US State is irrelevant. IF there is something fraudulent about the Univsity then a much better explanation is needed, and one which is supported by references from relevant and recognised authorities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.224.43.24 (talk) 01:17, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
- Nothing to see with the University of French Polynesia or New Caledonia. This so-called university of Wallis and Futuna is a fake created by a french-american crook called John Thomas, a.k.a Jean Noel Prade a.k.a Robert de Sorbon.
- Thanks. My french is a little rusty but I see from the article the University is rather dubious. My concern was never to insist on its inclusion in the article, just that to critise it simply because it was not registered in a single US state was irrelevant.
Hilarious
I think this is the funniest article I've ever read on Wikipedia. Well done! 71.179.4.82 (talk) 03:53, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
Flag
Overseas departments and territories of France and this talk page have an own flag for Wallis and Futuna. So why does the article have flag of France in the infobox? 82.141.74.224 (talk) 02:25, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
- The flag doesn't have official legal status as full flag of the territory. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 12:18, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
- This sucks so badly. When I looked into the "Overseas" article, two of them are the opposite; they don't have a flag there but have in their own articles. Those were Réunion and Saint Martin. 82.141.66.136 (talk) 00:06, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
Politics, History AND 3 Kings
The history section makes it appear as though these islands were uninhabited before the French, but the article also refers to "3 Kings", which I assume are not the Kings of France... Were these islands inhabited before the French arrived, and/or who were these kings? Tuf-Kat 08:06, Feb 19, 2004 (UTC)
there is a large lacuna in your coverage of these islands and that is education. What is the education system available to these people? Must they study in the medium of French or can they study in their own native tongue and if so up to what level? Are primary and secondary schooling available to all on the islands and what about higher education? If they have to leave the islands for this I wonder what percentage never return.
- W&F being an entire part of France, pupils on W&F study in school exclusively in French (although they can take a few classes in their native language). Just like native indians or native hawaiians in the US study in English. It's as simple as that. France has land in every corner of the world. The unifying trait of these diverse populations is precisely the French language. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.2.144.78 (talk) 21:06, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE NOTED 'LACUNA': I have noticed that the sections corresponding to 'Politics' and 'History' are confused. The section on 'Politics' would be better titled: Administration; while the section on 'History' includes some Politics of the islands (e.g. the King's son and protests.).
I am absolutely no expert, but I recommend that somebody who does know about the Islands should edit the sections for the sake of coherency. Wanitto (talk) 17:19, 6 May 2012 (UTC)
Capitals
Do uninhabited islands really have "capitals"? Even if formerly populated, these would now at best be "former capitals". I would imagine that in most cases that these islands which are now uninhabited but once were in most cases had one settlement and nothing so formally organized in the way of government to have truly been regarded as a "capital city" designation would imply. 2600:1004:B104:6E3A:F0C2:FD64:7908:1412 (talk) 21:59, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
