"Baudin"/"Symonds"/"Cameron"? edit

This seems to be a common occurrence across Wikipedia - people otherwise not referred to in the text being referred to by only their last names. Who are "Symonds" and "Cameron"? Never heard of 'em. Who is "Baudin"? Why did he lead an expedition which ended up naming something after somebody else? It's not clear who he is or why he is mentioned. The same goes for articles which quote from research papers in the text - the last names of obscure doctors, professors and the like are completely meaningless to a lay audience.
