Number of people massacred

Hi user:Figure19, in 2010 you added that "15,000 civilians, including 6,972 Jewish people" were killed during the German occupation of Vileyka. I wanted to add this to the German-language Wikipedia, but the source linked (which was added later) only mentions the 6,972, but not 15,000. What is your source for that higher number? It's my fault I didn't specify the source, and I'm not sure now where I took this from 10 years ago. Seamingly, it was the corresponding article in Russian wiki: "The Nazi invaders during the war has murdered more than 15 thousand civilians in the district, including 5 villages completely burned along with population." As you can see, the statement is not about Vileyka itself, but Vileyka District (created in 1946), and it does not refer to any sources also. I've inserted request for a source in ru-wiki, let's see. --Figure19 (talk) 14:56, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

– Per WP:BELARUSIANNAMES. The letter "е" in "Вілейка" should be romanized as "ye" according to BGN/PCGN romanization of Belarusian, therefore it should be "Vilyeyka". There is also no clear common name for this settlement, and WP:BELARUSIANNAMES instructs us to follow BGN/PCGN romanization in that case. Mellk (talk) 02:40, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

Vilyeyka → Vileika – WP:COMMONNAME: most common English name, which any general-purpose rules cannot trump. google ngram does not see 'Vilyeyka' in books at all --Altenmann >talk 21:40, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

Comment. If it is argued that a common name exists, then this probably would be Vileika. See for example Google Scholar.[1][2] But the town is fairly obscure in English-language sources to have a common name, hence why this argument is typically only used for regional capitals (compare for example Mogilev with 25,000 results). Well,google ngram does say that 'Vileika' does beat Vileyka with the exception of recent times since Wikipedia started (Why this would be so? :-). So I am changing my target title. Sorry it didnt come to my mind to check earlier. --Altenmann >talk 22:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

I am still not sure, if we disregarded WP:BELARUSIANNAMES and simply judged by Ngram then this would require moving nearly all articles, e.g. Baranavichy,[3] Salihorsk,[4] Maladzyechna,[5] and so on. Mellk (talk) 23:28, 3 September 2024 (UTC)

A ngram is an indicator which English name is more common. Contrary to your opinion, Vileyka is not that obscure place. and does have reasonable level of occurrence in English texts. And I am not against moving many pages exactly such as Baranavichy, but I am not that level of fanaticism of Danzig/Gdansk or Kyiv/Kiev level. It is just the spelling "Vilyeyka" strikes me as really weird. --Altenmann >talk 02:51, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
