Well-written article. Your illustration of the route of Via Aurelia is outstanding along with the picture you provided with. For the beginning part of your article, you may want to specify the location of Agrigentum and Panormus and their relation to Rome which C.Aurelius Cotta was once involved in his building projects. Unfortunately, there seem to have no articles on these cities in Wikipedia. Maybe you could label the second paragraph as “Route” section. Good job on describing the route of the Via Aurelia, though you might want to specify a couple of terms, like Porta Aurelia and Pons Aemilius. The last paragraph will be your “Major role/function” section. Readers may want know how “reasonably quick” communications took place through the roads of the Via Aurelia, maybe you could say it only took certain days for the Roman legions to march between cities.

The map and description of the route are good. It would be helpful if you divided the article into sections to make it easier to read. You explained in general why the Romans constructed roads during the middle republic, but you might want to go into more detail about the specific reasons for the Via Aurelia.

The colored map speaks for itself. You might also want to mention how long the extension made in 109 BC was just so that the readers will be aware of the full scope of the road. You did an excellent job describing all the cities it connected and paid attention to details, but it would better explain the practical functions of the Via Aurelia if you described the characteristics or importance of the cities it connected.

I have added the recent Smithsonian article (Joshua Hammer, Via Aurelia: The Roman Empire's Lost Highway, Smithsonian magazine, June 2009) to the External links, but after reading it I am very confused as to the relation between the Via Aurelia discussed there (which was started by Julius Caesar and ran through southern France) and the one discussed in this Wikipedia entry (which was built much earlier and runs through northern Italy).
