Comebacks

You ask about his multiple comebacks: How many chances do you get? Until he gets it right. Apparently, he hasn't. Danny 00:27 Feb 8, 2003 (UTC)

Pictures

What? No Pictures? --Cyberman 1 July 2005 09:04 (UTC)

What's with this picture? That's not the Ice I or 99.99% of the population remember. Where's the haircut? The eyebrow cutting? The jumpsuit? 202.142.214.75 22:50, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

That's just the picture someone uploaded. But since it has no copyright info and is almost certainly a copyvio, it will be deleted soon enough, and then this article will have no photo. Tuf-Kat 06:12, September 10, 2005 (UTC)

The picture's caption says "Vanilla Ice's mugshot was taken in January 2001 after he was arrested for assaulting his wife." but the article doesn't mention this arrest, shouldn't it? Yes it should.

Somebody really needs to upload a picture of Vanilla Ice. This article is falling into a state of disrepair. Toonmon2005 20:20, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

This article and the Swedish version say he was born in Dallas, but the German and Finnish versions say Miami Lakes (the Polish gives both). Anyone have any authoritative source backing up one over the other? -Elmer Clark 09:15, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Several online sources say he was born in Miami Lakes, FL. I am going to change the article to reflect this fact. 1 2 Chad 19:11, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

He lied about is birthplace to increase his record producers income. He is from suburban Texas.

Could you provide a source? The majority of sources seem to support Miami Lakes. -Elmer Clark 21:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

He was born in miami,FL but moved to dallas texas when he was young. *YaHeard* 2:20,april 19 2007.

No, he was born in Dallas, Texas; lived in Garland, and Midlothian, Texas until his mother divorced and moved him to Paris, Texas in 1977. She later re-married and moved back to the Dallas area, settling in Carrollton, where Rob attended High School at R.L. Turner.Ch06020016 15:14, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

The birthplace section has at least three things wrong with it; it misnames the high school he attended (R.L. Turner High School), refers to Carrolton as a suburb of Plainfield (no city by that name is anywhere near the Dallas area, though there is a large suburb called Plano), and when you click the link to Carrolton, you are lead to the wikipedia page for Clayton, Indiana rather than Carrolton, Texas. --Labocoas (talk) 00:37, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

NPOV

Upon coming across this article, I was a little bothered by the direction that some of the editors took in placing negative opinions of this artist, using words like "egocentric" to descibe his music, and stating that 11 million copies makes him "arguably" one of the best selling rappers of his time. I'd just like to remind people that the wikipedia pages should remain factual, and nothing else. Remember: this is an encyclopedia. Accipio Mitis Frux 18:44, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Maybe it was VH1: Behind the Music, or the E! Hollywood True Story, but I distinctly remember that the controversy between Vanilla Ice and David Bowie was more of a publicity stunt by Vanilla Ice, since Bowie had in fact given permission for the bass riff. Someone should check this. Also, he actually did have a rather rough, from the "neighborhood" type background, but unfortunately, he made up certain events that were exposed and made people overlook the fact that he actually was the "real deal". Someone should add stuff about this.

I do distinctly recall Ice also stating in an interview that the tunes were infact different and proceeded to tap and hum out the beat of his tune and then Bowies in comparison.. of course there was no noticeable difference.. not sure how to go about proving that.. maybe youtube.--213.152.46.79 12:00, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Ummmm Are you refering to Queen? The bass riff from Ice Ice Baby was thought to be copied from Queen's song Under Pressure. Behind the Music with Vanilla Ice did not mention David Bowie. NMBJ69 (talk) 08:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Copyvio

External links lists "Video for 'Ice Ice Baby'" and "Jim Carrey's impression of Vanilla Ice from the 1990-91 season of In Living Color", those two are probably copyrights violations and should be removed. --Narcala 00:22, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

It wouldn't be a copyright infringement unless someone was passing it off as their own. The link clearly states "from In Living Color", which is now a defunct show. --JOK3R 20:32, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Cool as Ice

"However, in the early 2000s, it enjoyed a new status as a so-bad-it's-good cult film." Maybe someone can create an article on Wikipedia explaining what exactly "so-bad-it's-good" means and what the 'cult' is that's surrounding this, possibly including examples of things (movies, songs, ...) that are so bad they are considered good. The so-bad-it's-good saying gives me 0.2 million hits on Google and is used on several Wikipedia pages, so a more detailed explanation is probably welcome. --62.194.194.24 15:42, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Ice did not get dangled by suge knight

Columbia Heights, Washington, D.C.: Did you or did you not get dangled off the balcony by Suge Knight. Let's get the truth.

Vanilla Ice: No. I did not. It was kind of funny -- when they take a little bit of truth in the media. If it's not exciting, they polish it up a bit. I was on the balcony and had signed over a lot of contractual money to him and felt like I did the right thing. In a weird way, he was nice but firm with me. He took me to the balcony and talked to me... but it's funny how the story gets turned around... I'm wondering how that story got changed around.

I got the clue. I'm not no idiot. I feel like I did the right thing and it's 15 years ago now. It's old news.

Corrected HTS credits

Fixed the really incorrect crediting of Hard to Swallow. I've got the actual liner notes, neither Dave Kushner or Scott Shriner are credited at all. Sonny Mayo isn't listed in the credits on AMG, but the guitar is credited as "Sonny" and the music writing credits list "Mayo" among other last names, it really sounds like Sonny Mayo's guitar work, he wasn't really doing anything else between Snot and Sevendust, so I'd say it's safe to assume it's Sonny Mayo. Nickname

Why did he pick the name Vanilla Ice? Is it something to do with him being white, or, in black vernacular, a vanilla face? Scott Gall 10:08, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

"How did you come to be called Vanilla Ice in the first place?
Back when I was 13 or 14 I used to spin on my head on cardboard and break dance, and I had a bunch of black friends and they just labeled me Vanilla Ice. Actually, I didn't like it, so they just called me it more. It just stuck with me like a nickname."

missing an auxiliary verb in 1st line of "Stylistic Changes"

"By 1994, Van Winkle, who had received less publicity and become removed from the public spotlight,"...

The auxiliary verb "had" needs to be inserted before the word "become".

-Alejandro AlejandroMS (talk) 18:32, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Lawsuit - "minute detail on a single song "

I would beg to differ with the opinion that a lawsuit for the intellectual rights to a song is a "minute detail". That's quite serious actually, as not only would it question the integrity of the performer in front of the whole world, but it's even more serious when that performer is considered a "one hit wonder", and their one mega blockbuster hit is precisely the song getting them in legal hot water (and many people would argue that Vanilla Ice was a one hit wonder, whether they're correct or not doesn't matter because that's what they perceive, and their perception is their reality). In addition to this, the person that would have filed the supposed lawsuit wasn't exactly some no name John Doe from down the street.

Whether the album and the song in question "have articles" or not on the internet, is not really of relevance here, because in applying that logic to wikipedia,it would then render probably 99% of the information contributed here, redundant and unnecessary. And in fact, one of wikipedia's strengths is precisely in bringing a large portion of information on one topic, altogether in a one stop shopping experience.

Respectfully,

Section titles

In the process of responding to the semi-protected edit request above, I noted the titles of the sections. I believe those titles should be changed. The current titles refer primarily to his musical work, but the information in the sections also covers personal details and other non-musical information. For example, neither his arrest in 2008, nor any of the TV appearances after that have anything to do with his "Independent releases", as the section is titled. Personally, I'd recommend separating all of the information about his musical work from the information about other things, making a section for personal life, as well as a section for other work (TV, movies, etc.). However, I don't know enough about the subject (nor do I have enough interest to learn) to make the changes myself. Perhaps a more regular watcher of this page could tackle this issue. In the line "In December 2011, Van Winkle will portray Captain Hook in the Chatham Central Theatre pantomime production of Peter Pan alongside Henry Winkler.[82]" you need to remove the last three words "alongside Henry Winkler". Its factually incorrect. The cited source implies that he's following in the footsteps of Henry Winkler by taking this role, they are not co-stars.

3. The film "I Hate You, Dad" has changed. It is now called "Donny's Boy." Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232200/

4. The whole Debbie Gibson / Love Connection is ridiculous, has no citation, and is flat-out UNTRUE.

5. Despite media reports, Vanilla Ice is still with his wife. They have not divorced and are still together. This line needs to be removed.

6. Under "Independent Releases," the following line: "In 2003, Ultrax reissued Bomb Tha System (the second part of "Bi-Polar") under the title Hot Sex, which was a single from the original album." can be cited with: http://www.vanillaice.com/hotsex.htm

Change this line to: after spending ten days at the hospital, Ice signed a contract with the owner of City Lights, Tommy Quon's management company, Ultrax; and also Gary Henry, a rap music legend from Grand Master Flash, The Message and Sugarhill Records.

Background: Gary Henry played the keyboards and programmed the drums on The Message by Grand Master Flash. Gary Henry was a staff producer, engineer and writer for Sugarhill Records and met Vanilla Ice in Dallas, TX when he was recording gospel music for gospel legend Douglas Miller. (Local Team News 9) Vanilla Ice died in a single vehicle crash on Route 80 between Morristown and Roswell. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics responding to the vehicle accident and was identified by photo ID found on his body. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in this accident - June 18, 2012

Vanilla Ice flipped vehicle Highway Safety Investigators have told reporters that Vanilla Ice lost control while driving a friend's vehicle on Interstate 80 and rolled the vehicle several times killing him instantly.

The vehicle was believed to have been traveling at approximately 95 miles per hour in a 55mph zone at the time of the accident.

Witnesses have stated that Vanilla Ice's car crossed the double lines several times prior to the accident and hit the center lane divider causing the vehicle to flip and roll. Click here to find out more! Toxicology tests will be performed to determine whether he was driving under the influence, however initial findings indicate that durgs or alcohol did not contribute in any way to this accident as it was more likely to been caused by road conditions.

Memorial services for Vanilla Ice have not yet been announced. The service is expected to be a closed casket funeral due to the severe head trauma.

Wikipedia would require a specific citation for this sort of edit specifically to prevent spreading of rumors and hoaxes: Ice himself has reported that he is alive. DMacks (talk) 08:00, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Vanilla Ice became a household word for a while, not because of his talent, but because of the copyright infringement that occured in 1990 when it came to light that he had sampled Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” without consent or license. Ice Ice Baby hit number one on the charts in the United States and Vanilla Ice became the one ‘under pressure’. Vanilla Ice altered the rhythm of the baseline thinking he would thereby avoid any question of credit, royalties, license or even permission. This case never went to court as it was clear that Vanilla Ice had stolen the sample without permission. He settled out of court with Queen and David Bowie for an undisclosed but very likely very high amount. Ice Ice Baby has been released in many different versions, since then, with all of the legal procedures followed.

Why has this factual information been left out of the artcle ?

Cloak23 (talk) 00:10, 31 July 2012 (UTC) On August 2, 2005, Van Winkle released his fifth studio album, Platinum Underground. Van Winkle stated that the title of the album reflected the fact that he could maintain a fanbase without mainstream airplay.[6] Allrovi reviewer Rob Theakston panned the album, writing that it "has more bad spots in it than most".[74] After getting requests to do Ninja Rap live, Ice decided to make a song entitled Ninja Rap 2 (also known as Go Ninja Go) which was set to be a hardcore remix. Despite the name, the song has very little connections to Van Vinkle's original 1991 single, but rather stays true to Ice's current lyricism, where Ice talks about his appreciation to his fans, his love to perform at clubs and playing at the Gathering of the Juggalos with Insane Clown Posse. Ninja Rap 2 was the first song to be released from Platinum Underground and was available to download for free off of Ice's official website.

notice that about halfway down, Winkles last name is typed as 'Vinkle' just thought i would bring it to someones attention.

Edit request on 6 November 2012

There is a new drummer for Vanilla Ice. His name is Keith Reber. He is from Dallas and was previously in A Dozen Furies. He has played 2 shows so far. One it MusicFest 2012 in Eldorade, Arkansas. The next in Jensen Beach Florida at The Pinapple Festival. [1] Hallbrooks24 (talk) 21:43, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Is there an official source for this, or a reliable press report? (I'm afraid that YouTube is not generally considered a reliable source).
A Google search only gives me YouTube and FaceBook results for Keith Reber - but maybe I should be looking somewhere else? Begoontalk 02:04, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Here is an update by YUMS which is company Keith Reber is sponsored by in Dallas. Not sure if this will suffice. http://www.yumslife.com/blog/lifestyle/?page=5 http://www.last.fm/music/Vanilla+Ice/+wiki — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hallbrooks24 (talkcontribs) 03:04, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, that's still just a blog (for a commercial sales outlet, I think). Have another look at the reliable sources guidelines to see what kinds of sources are reliable. Of course, even with reliable sources, you may still need to convince other editors that this information is important enough to include in an article about Vanilla Ice - (e.g. it wasn't just a couple of tour gigs, etc...) Queen law suit

From my memory Vanilla Ice was sued for his unauthorized and unacknowledged use of the base line for Queens Under Pressure which he used in Ice Ice Baby. I cannot find mention of it in the article. Since Ice Ice Baby is the biggest hit of Vanilla Ice I think it should be mentioned. Another reason to mention it is that some comments on you tube accuse Queen of stealing Vanilla Ice's riff. So to set the story straight it should be mentioned.Noelgerardwood (talk) 22:29, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Noel Wood

NPOV

I like Vanilla Ice and all, he seems like a cool guy. Buy this article comes off as if it was written by him (joking -I hope), or at the very least a huge Vamilla Ice fan. And the article is locked so that raises suspicion. All this stuff about SBK Records releasing a fake biography.. well even if they did that, Vanilla Ice went right along with it at that time. I have on VHS tape -yes VHS, because that is what was out at that time- of an interview where they eluded to this exact same thing.. that his background seems trumped up. In the interview it speculated that since his look and sound wasn't like the other rappers, at least his background should sound like it. And Vanilla Ice sat there plain as day and went along with the background release, saying it was all true. He stood up, slightly pulled down his pants, and showed what was supposed to be a gunshot wound. He then went into some talk that people seems to act as though he shouldn't have a number one hit because he was from the streets. And his response to that is "(quote) take it to the bank. Who has a number one hit, and who doesn't? So I say to them, take it to the bank (quote)". SBK may have released this fake bio without his knowledge, or maybe they did make his team aware of it prior to releasing it so Vanilla Ice wouldn't be caught off guard in interviews -that's the more likely scenario. But regardless, Vanilla Ice went right along with it, so don't complain now. Tell us how it was but don't complain. And this constant mentioning of him regretting his relationship with SBK Records when SBK is the one who has made him known to us. He wouldn't have had a 7 times platinum album in the US, or a number one song and a top five song, or be a millionaire, or go on to have the tv show about making home improvements, or have the luxury of raising his children without worries about money if it wasn't for SBK Records. Lots of people sign major label deals and aren't too happy with the songs they have to record, or the image that is crafted for them. But as the years go by, these artists gain more control over their careers. Vanilla Ice just couldn't adjust and keep up with the new artists and he fell by the wayside. It happens. But notice, none of his releases, even on major label Republic/ Universal charted on the Top 200 Album Chart. So he shouldn't quite be putting SBK under the ringer when he can look at a bank account with millions of dollars in it. And if making music is very important to him, well he is still doing that. If the label did a fake bio, then that was WRONG. But Vanilla Ice was just as wrong to go along with it. Again, this article seems just a little too pro-Vanilla Ice, although I do like him. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.251.112.134 (talk) 20:22, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

NPOV II

This is supposed to be a neutral point of view. Why is there no paragraph or mention of Vanilla Ice being sued for using music from the song 'Under Pressure"? This is Vanilla Ice's biggest hit, and he even denied the accusations at first. He latered enede up in court over this. And Vanilla Ice was also threaten and hung over a balcony of a high rise building by Suge Knight and his people. They threatento kill him unless he signed over profits from one of his songs. I have read about this in a few different publications, and Vanilla Ice even spoke about it years later. How come I can read about this in other pubications but come to an internet encyclopedia and NOT read about it? This article seems to be written by someone who is too much of a Vanilla Ice fan and who wants to let Vanilla Ice off the hook for decisions he made, and doesn't want to write anything negative into the article. It doesn't even go into small details about his suicide attempt. I like Vanilla Ice, but this is not the place to write as "a fan". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.251.112.134 (talk) 20:33, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure character

Should there be some mention or possibility of a disambiguation page relating to the JoJo's Bizzare Adventure character of the same name? The character has made multiple appearances in media other than the book series, including the international releases of some video games. Other names for the character (used to avoid copyright infringement in international releases) include Iced and Cool Ice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.9.245.147 (talk) 13:24, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Controversy over Ice Ice Baby not mentioned

There should be a section or at least a paragraph on here mentioning the lawsuit and controversy over the song Ice Ice Baby. The issue is that Vanilla Ice sampled a Queen/David Bowie song (Under Pressure) for his song Ice Ice Baby, and did not give credit initially. Basically song writing plagiarism. Anyone that lived through the 90's knows that it was a big deal for quite awhile. And it is argumentatively part of what caused Vanilla Ice's spiral down from the spotlight. However there is no mention of it on this page, and barely a sentence on the Ice Ice Baby page.
A quick search on any search engine of "vanilla ice vs queen & bowie court case" or any variation of that will yield hundreds of results. Even just typing in "vanilla ice vs " and the suggestions will show just how many hits there are for this. Point being it was a big deal when it happened. And it should be mentioned here as well.

I request to change the 2.3 Mind blowing, music break and dug abuse (1994-1996)in the second paragraph and first sentence. I would like to change the sentence from "By 1994, Ice received less publicity and became removed from the public spotlight." I would like to change the sentence with replacing the period with a comma and adding more words. I would like for it to be written like this "By 1994, Ice received less publicity and became removed from the public spotlight, the fall was painful and public to Robert van Winkle."

Why is there no mention of the "Under Pressure" controversy in the Legal Issues section?

This issue, which is mentioned in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_Pressure#Sampling and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Ice_Baby#Lyrics_and_music, as well as http://www.fairwagelawyers.com/most-famous-music-copyright-infringment.html, is a significant part of his career and the history of music sampling in rap and hip hop music. Many people remember him more for this incidence of plagiarism than for anything else. It seems unbalanced not to address this in this biographical article. Needs Additional Citations Template

The article is currently tagged with a needs additional citations template. Is that the best remedy? The article is well cited overall. If there a few statements which need verification, a citation needed template for those sentences might be more appropriate. Knope7 (talk) 02:40, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

  • Agree. Six months have gone past, and there the tag sits, so I'm pulling it out. If editors reman concerned, I'm also suggesting that individual citations pinpoint the specific areas that need refs. Jusdafax 15:51, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

The claim that Robert Van Winkle "won three championships" in motocross points to a Miami Herald article that does NOT prove that statement. There is nothing in the article that provides actual evidence to support this claim and therefore the link should be deleted as "proof" or a footnote and the sentence should be noted as unproven. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.231.19.69 (talk) 11:17, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
