Title

In fact the title should really be VKontakte, with Vkontakte as a redirect. The website markets itself as "ВКонтакте" and media describe it using that form as well, as it comes from two Russian words, "V" and "Kontakte." Yablochko (talk) 22:52, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

It now offers 67 languages (to varying degrees of quality), I think at that stage a language list offers little value. If anyone agrees I'll replace language list with a language count, probably in the body of the text rather than infobox. Yablochko (talk) 23:03, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Indexing

It is claimed that the site content is not indexed by the search engines

It's said that vkontakte.ru doesn't allow indexing by search engines but in fact situation changed not so far ago. Though google throw only 21 200 results by site:vkontakte.ru request. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Artli (talk • contribs) 08:17, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

It's still not allowing. You still have to login. All pages indexed by search engines leads to small teasers (name, photo and login requirement). You still have to login and get user's authorization to see user's page and other pages. Elk Salmon (talk) 10:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Expert Needed

I think a Russian speaker with experience could really help this article. While I am into social media, I have never heard of this service and think the article needs some outside help.

I am going to do a bit of work on it. The Russian-language version of the page is frankly a mess, and littered with marketing material pasted in by the company, so I don't think we should be modelling the article on that. Yablochko (talk) 23:07, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Page Structure

As VKontkate is such a blatant clone of Facebook, it's only correct that its wiki page should be a clone of FB's page! The current structure is

I think the goal should be something closer to Facebooks's current one of:

1 History 2 Company 3 Website 4 Reception 5 Criticism 6 Political impact 7 In media

Privacy section outdated or wrong

The Privacy section has this...

It is claimed that the search engines do not index site content.[who?] Furthermore, the Russian market's dominating players, Yandex, Rambler, and, to a lesser extent, Google do not link to privacy-locked VKontakte pages, as well as users who choose to open their pages to the general public; in fact, search engines currently provide no indication whatsoever that any user is registered on VKontakte

But actually, Google seems to crawl it and it even shows results from it. I googled for my Russian friend's name, and the first result was her VK profile. I don't know if this is a change that was recently made, or if it was always this way. There's a 404 error if I try to load robots.txt from either vkontakte.ru or vk.com, so they don't even seem to be blocking web crawlers at all unless they are looking at user-agent or something... I assume they require you to log in to see private profiles, but public ones it clearly doesn't. Even without a robots.txt, perhaps Google has a localized setting where it filters these results out if you're searching from a Russian IP or something like they did with China's localized search? I searched on google.ru (from my USA IP though) and it shows her profile as #1 too. Yandex and Rambler don't seem to list VK profiles... I assume they probably have an agreement to manually do this? USSR in Intro Line

I changed it from "social network popular in former USSR countries" to "social network popular in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan." My reasoning is that those are the only countries where VK is in the top ten Alexa ranking. As far as I can see Facebook far outranks VK in every other ex-Soviet state. It is misleading to talk about countries as diverse as Estonia, Georgia, and Turkmenistan in the same sentence as if they form some kind of cohesive group. -- Yablochko (talk) 18:48, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Inconsistency in sites' rank in Russia

This section is poorly translated and makes almost no sense in English. Perhaps an English speaker who knows what they're talking about should retranslate it? The provided link [3] to support this claim DOES NOT confirm this actually. I went through all of the article and it doesn't even mention VKontakte.ru. Needs to be verified or denied using more credible sources. ````

This article needs some help

It's not written in a particularly encyclopedic style, it's pretty out-of-date, and it's missing citations. If anybody has time to work on it, this might be a useful article for background: Crime, Punishment, and Russia's Original Social Network, from Motherboard/Vice.
