Accent on E

edit

Are you sure that the grave accent on the first e in Meffert is correct? It's uncommon in German, and it's not on his home page. If the accent is correct, this should be noted in the article imho. -- wr 87.139.81.19 (talk) 12:42, 18 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've wondered about this too. However, it might have been Mëffert (or similar) in his ancestry, since the name does not sound too German to me at all but rather Alsatian or even Luxembourgish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.7.10.130 (talk) 21:12, 25 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Mëffert definitely doesn't exist in German either. In German only ä, ö and ü exist. I can't really find any sources for the accent. If you search for him with the accent, the first thing you find is Wikepedia and then a few puzzle/cubing related wikias. Judith Sunrise (talk) 17:16, 6 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Maybe the name isn't German. There are many people who have foreign surnames because they are descended from somebody of a different nationality – Steven Spielberg and Paolo Nutini for example. So this could be just a case of the same.
But this doesn't answer the question of the source for this spelling, or which spelling is correct. http://mefferts.com/, apparently owned by the man himself, has it as Meffert throughout. Can we take it as definitive? — Smjg (talk) 14:10, 30 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
It's also spelled Mèffert in several other sources (e.g. this book originally from 1985). Perhaps Uwe decided to drop the accent in his brand for international purposes? Drabkikker (talk) 10:01, 9 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

Uwe's son Ulrich told me that Uwe died on 30 april, which he told me soon after, but asked me not to tell others so he could inform Uwe's wide circle of friends. His personal email to me says "Yes, he passed away at 8:16 am on the 30th of April". — Preceding unsigned comment added by M. Oskar van Deventer (talkcontribs) 09:42, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
