1978 U.S. National Book Award in Translation edit

This complex section is a reference for my notifications to editors at German wikipedia de:Uwe George and at National Book Foundation, in progress. --P64 (talk) 20:53, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

First, the translator received the award, not the original author Uwe George.

When I alert NBF to the problem, I will ask whether the translator or the work is considered to be the Award winner. --P64 (talk) 18:59, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Second, there must be a clerical error at the "reliable source" National Book Foundation. [1] lists Howard Nemerov as the winner of both 1978 awards Poetry and Translation (Uwe George, The Deserts of This Earth).

See also the German Uwe George. --P64 (talk) 21:53, 10 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

This 1998 review identifies the 1977 English translators
Cambridge Book Review

In the Deserts of This Earth
By Uwe George
Translated from the German by
Richard and Clara Winston

Authority control in progress edit

Using primarily VIAF i think i have resolved this.

http://viaf.org/viaf/39659039

http://d-nb.info/gnd/124765483 (see records/Treffer 15 16 17 of 17)

first ed. publ. 1976 (not 1977, and this was his first published book; 114 ill.);
second ed. publ. 1977 (only 94 ill.);
first English language ed. publ. 1977 US, translators Richard and Clara Winston

http://lccn.loc.gov/n90622000 (see records 1 2 4 of 5)

confirm some and
first UK ed. publ. 1978, same translation

Now I complete template {{Authority control}} for links to these bibliographic resources from the foot of the article.

Resolution edit

A clerical error by the National Book Foundation.
Google
clara winston national book award 1978
leads voila!
http://www.nationalbook.org/nba1978.html Translation: Finalists:
Richard Winston & Clara Winston - Uwe George’s In the Deserts of this Earth
The listed winner is spurious; Howard Nemerov/Uwe George conflates the preceding winner (Poetry) and the first listed finalist. --P64 (talk) 18:40, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Now I have revised the article to incorporate both {{Authority control}} and this resolution of the problem. The details may help editors at German wikipedia and National Book Foundation. --P64 (talk) 18:59, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

German-language sources edit

2012-03-10 examination of the article reveals derivation from a German language source. Content is close to de:Uwe George but the English wikipedia article is one year older; both articles cite one 2001 German-language interview that I infer to be the principal source for both.

The German de:Uwe George is younger but now includes more content —except my today introduction of more about his 1976 first book and the 1977 U.S. National Book Award for Translation. So the German may be a valuable source and I have inserted the appropriate hat-banner {{Expand German}}.

At the moment, the article includes my inappropriate reference
