Excerpts from Uri Davis' early work edit

Some people might find it useful to access some of Davis' earlier works that are not available on line. --Deodar 21:36, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Jew edit

I deleted the word "former" before "Jew" in the last portion of the article because: (1) the source cited refers to him as a Jew and not as a "former" Jew, and (2) under Jewish law a person born Jewish does not cease being Jewish by not practicing Judaism or by converting to another faith. --NYCJosh (talk) 18:57, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

You´re misinterpretating the jewish law. If someone converts to Islam, noone will call him a jew anymore. He converted 2008, so he was a "former" jew when elected. 77.2.140.17 (talk) 19:59, 24 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
And you don't understand that religious law doesn't engluf the definition of jewishness. only (Very iow orthodox) religious jews adhere to that and not all. Shiftadot (talk) 19:44, 11 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Judiasm isn't merely a faith, while an Orthodox jew may see his birth as an obligation of faith, Jews (irrelevent of sector) collectively define it as determined by birth and obtainable by conversion and permanent. Although if he ceased to consider himself a Jew that would be an entirely different story, but conversion to Islam as a formality doesn't seem enough. First Jew to such a position edit

The article used as the source for this paragraph fails to mention this. Additionally as Moshe Hirsch was a Minister for Jewish Affairs he was clearly not the first to such a high position although I'm unsure if Hirsch was elected or merely appointed. Menachemsdavis (talk) 04:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hirsch was not the only Jew to be appointed to a senior PLO position; others include Ilan Halevi and Livia Rokach. Davis is indeed the first to be elected. The Haaretz article cited for this assertion in the article clearly states "He (Davis) was the first Jew to become a member of the Revolutionary Council since it was established in 1958".[1] RolandR (talk) 22:18, 29 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Suggest adding a link to his papers at the University of Exeter edit

origin of name "Davis" edit

In terms of the article, it would add interest to give the origin of the surname "Davis". --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 13:16, 28 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean? There is nothing to distinguish "Davis" from any of the thousands of surnames of biographical subjects in Wikipedia, and absolutely no reason to discuss the etymology of this perfectly ordinary name. RolandR (talk) 18:29, 28 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Presumably it would be interesting to know something about his background, as he has an English/Welsh surname that is not typically jewish 176.203.118.243 (talk) 11:51, 7 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
What is a "typically Jewish" name? How many Jews have to share a name for it to be "typically Jewish"? And do all Jews have to have one? RolandR (talk) 13:21, 7 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Academic affiliations not supported edit

Neither IMEIS at the University of Durham nor IAIS at the University of Exeter lists Davis as an honorary research fellow. I was going to note these claims as needing citations, but evidence indicates they are actually incorrect. Both claims may simply be out of date. His name does not come up on a search of the Durham U website, but the Exeter affiliation appears as an announcement on the Exeter U website issued in 2009: http://www.exeter.ac.uk/news/archive/2009/december/title_49492_en.html Tafkira2 (talk) 18:44, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Interview edit

I do not want to mess around with the page, but I think the embedded interview is full of hateful propaganda and lies that should not be published on wikipedia. This might be the way that he talks, but by publishing it in his bio it dignifies his rambling. I suggest to delete it, or add a link to the interview on a different server/source Tilmazio (talk) 18:27, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
