neutron cross section

edit

Does the nitrogen absorb neutrons in both the thermal and fast spectrum? Or does fast spectrum imply much much less absorption? Could someone comment on this? Fsikkema (talk) 12:23, 1 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Formula

edit

I think UN, UN2, and U2N3 may all be called "uranium nitride", but have very different properties. 68.166.185.30 22:23, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Typically in the nuclear industry "Uranium nitride" refers to to the mononitride (UN), not the sesquinitride (U2N3) or the dinitride (UN2). As far as I know, the proposed Hyperion reactor uses UN fuel, not U2N3. The above poster is correct, in that the properties of each nitride are rather different. Even the sesquinitride listed has two separate crystal structures (alpha or beta) depending on stoichiometry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.12.184.2 (talk) 16:18, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

First paragraph not English

edit

Can we please delete the first paragraph: "Uranium nitride refers to a family of several ceramic materials: uranium mononitride (UN), uranium sesquinitride (U2N3) and uranium dinitride (UN2). Nitride refers to -3 oxidation state of the nitrogen bound to the uranium. The nitrogen gets its -3 oxidation state from the nature of the triple bond that uranium forms with nitrogen in uranium nitride compounds."

Unless you are a scientist with a masters degree in this stuff, I doubt you can understand this.--Wyn.junior (talk) 20:44, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Car Fuel?

edit

Why does the second paragraph of the intro mention that uranium nitride is not a suitable fuel for cars? That's not wrong, but it's almost a goofy statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.91.171.34 (talk) 15:04, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
