Hall of Residence Information edit

I'm suggesting here the sort of information that we should include for each Hall of Residence:

  • Size (number of students)
  • Undergraduate or Postgraduate
  • Catered or self-catering
  • Current Warden
  • Former Wardens
  • Current JCR President
  • Mixed or single sex (and whether male / female hall in the past, and if so, when it went mixed)
  • Photograph
  • Named after (?)

Some of this information could form a 'box' template, leaving a 'wordy' section for information that's unique to that Hall.

Any suggestions about other information that should be included in a template, or thoughts on the idea? Jamse 13:45, 14 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I was a resident of Lenton Hall, actually Lenton Hurst with usually shared rooms, and I never knew it as New Lenton Hall. It was called plain Lenton Hall and that was the sign on the front of the building. (Victor Middlesex (talk) 07:17, 11 May 2012 (UTC))Reply

I was also a resident of Lenton Hurst, from 1987 to 1990. The suggestion that it was only used for student accommodation until the 70s is clearly incorrect. --Neil Ruston 21:58, 25 January 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neilruston@hotmail.com (talkcontribs)

SB Hall Names edit

I may be wrong, but I thought the house "Hathem" at SB is actually called "Hathern" (if its the one I used to live in...)

Repeated vandalism and use for kudos edit

This article is under heavy attack for vandelism and seems to be being used to gain kudos of various students. Do we really need Karni information or details of who the current JCR presidents are? This article needs a significant rewrite or even removal. Maybe a list of the halls of residence should simply be put into the main University of Nottingham article with some minor details for each hall. Spanky Deluxe 18:08, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Recent AFD - Keep Decision edit

Hi there, I see that the recent WP:AFD decision was to keep. Does anyone want to discuss how to improve / control this article in the future. E.g. is there any info that needs to be collected, or is there certain info (e.g. JCR presidents names) that should not as a rule be included?

Cheers Lethaniol 15:40, 13 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the result was more "no consensus" than it was "keep". I think the non-notability of a lot of the information -- size of the halls, JCR presidents, wardens, nicknames, rivalries, property management companies -- is clear. If there's not enough left to be an article after that, the remainder can be merged. --Stlemur 08:37, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I agree, my interpretation of the result was that there was no consensus - but I was just quoting the official result which was "keep". I agree, we need to remove the non-notable info, and this is what this discussion should be about.
I agree the size of halls (except noting the 2/3 largest/smallest), JCR presidents, nicknames, rivalries should all be removed.
I think that wardens should stay and be expanded (most halls have only had 4 to 6 wardens in there time), and up until recently they were very much the driving force behind the halls. Also we should leave space for any notable alumni.
Once this is all done, then we can have a look, and then think about merging (where will be an interesting question). Can we agree that the article's basic content should be kept, but maybe merged if not sufficient for a single article. Of course if we accept that this article falls under something like this area: Wikipedia:Lists (stand-alone lists), then maybe we dont have to worry about it being a long/in-depth article - just complete and suitably wiki-linked to.

I think that seems like a reasonable basis, but why keep the wardens? --Stlemur 17:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
As a previous hall tutor, I have a slightly biased perspective on this, so please bear that in mind. Unlike the JCR presidents (re-elected every year), the Warden can stay for many years, and most halls will have only had a handful of wardens, some who will have been notable in themselves. It used to be the case, sadly less so now, that the warden was responsible for the running of the hall (that is now largely the responsibility of the staff of Nottingham Hospitality), but the Warden (confirmed at recent reviews) is still seen as an central figurehead role of the hall for external purposes and for the students living there. So when fleshing out the story and character of each hall, documenting their wardens seems one of the obvious things to do, without adding massive lists of non-notable information. Anyway that is my reasoning.
Of course it might be more sensible to only add in wardens that are notable - either with respect to hall in that they were there for a long time, or that they are notable in wikipedia itself...

Links to JCR websites edit

I note that these have recently been removed, however I feel they are of relevance to the article, as many of them provide information far more in depth than seems allowed on wikipedia. Perhaps this information appears trivial to some, but I still think it worth the link to the JCRs' websites. If not part of the main article (as this seemed to be the problem) perhaps they could be included as a list at the end?

Riverside Point edit

I've noticed that Riverside Point keeps getting added to the Uni arranged section. Riverside is not a Uni arranged hall though, in it's debut year it did get taken on by the University of Nottingham but failed so spectaculalry that halfway through the academic year Unite pulled it as an option and moved as many students out as they could. Since the debut year they have not co-ordinated with the University at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.243.220.41 (talk) 09:01, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hall Presidents edit

Since hall presidents change every year, and the individuals who are hall presidents are not notable, should we really be including the information? Million_Moments (talk) 14:38, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm tempted to say no. There are few presidents who are in any way notable - the Nightingale one was only notable for filling the JCR store cupboard with gay porn and then leaving it for the next year's president when he graduated. Remove em all. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:50, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Self-catered halls! edit

this sction needs massive expansion! Broadgate houses more students than any of the on-campus halls so why is it mentioned so briefly? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wuku (talkcontribs) 21:04, 15 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Improve or delete? edit

Almost all the sections have absolutely no references and have not had for a decade. It narrowly escaped deletion in 2008, with claimed notability never substantiated. The refimprove of 2008 was removed in 2010 following the addition of then current hall wardens from the then current university website. However, nearly all of the information is totally unsubstantiated, and almost nothing independent. The header is very much university promotional, and the descriptions look personal. Happy though I am to read of places I remember (and my hall warden from long ago) it seems to be seriously lacking in the normal standard of Wikipedia.
