Quick note of change

Sadly, the college of Agriculture, Biotechnology et al. is being shut down due to fiscal issues. We will not continue to have it, and all relvant majors are beign moved into other colleges at the University. "Nevada"

I attended UNR and got my bachelor's degree there. I have never heard anyone call it Nevada, and it's very confusing referring to the college as Nevada in this article, since any reader will assume it's referring to the state. Show me examples of people calling it Nevada, Max. CGameProgrammer 14:49, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll give you the same one you gave me. I attended Nevada and got my bachelor's degree there. I had, in fact, heard it called "Nevada" by people at the school. I don't find it very confusing referring to the university as Nevada in this article, since many schools, such as UW-Madison are referred to as "Wisconsin" quite regularly. Watch the local Reno news or look at the uniforms of the sports teams, "Nevada." Madmaxmarchhare 15:47, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

On the University's Web site, under its "About" page, the university is referred to as "Nevada." Here's a link: http://www.unr.edu/content/about/ I have also heard from communications people who work for the University that this move to the "Nevada" identity is to differentiate itself from Las Vegas and to attempt to take root as Nevada's premiere university. --71.9.16.156 (talk) 14:45, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

I am currently attending the University and really do not like it when people refer to it as "UNR". The University dropped "Reno" from its name officially some time ago. The students with school-spirit generally call it Nevada, as does ESPN and other sports networks. None of the clothing sold or given out by the university reads "UNR". Since Nevada was the first established university in the state, it can be simply referred to as Nevada, just as The University of California at Berkely is known as "Cal".—Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.215.129.112 (talk) 02:48, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

The university has never officially dropped the "Reno" from its name. The state Board of Regents did not allow the university to drop Reno from its name several years ago when the previous university president wanted to the university to identify as "Nevada". This is why the school's main webpage, logo official seal, and other correspondence and official identifying marks all still show ", Reno". However, the spirit of "Nevada" has never gone away despite the board's decision. Thus, much of the recruitment efforts promote the school as "Nevada", and many of the colleges and programs use that term instead of UNR in their marketing, promotions and activities. -- LJ ↗ 08:55, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

     Sec. 6.  NRS 396.010 is hereby amended to read as follows:
     396.010  1.  The seat of the state university, as described in section 4 of article 11 of the constitution of the State of Nevada, is hereby located at the office of the chancellor of the University [of Nevada System.
     2.  The branches of the University of Nevada are the University of Nevada, Reno, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

@71.222.86.179: A local law does not define how articles and names are used in the general media. Per WP:COMMONNAME, "Nevada" is far more common in use by the media than UNR. Same goes for the "Wisconsin" example above and "California" (which is often just called "Berkeley" or "UC Berkeley" by the other UC schools and even locals, but almost always just called "Cal" outside of California). 1. "The university is fast becoming known for its journalism school" (in lead, so it's both obvious and important to remove. Perhaps more of a ref needed tag, though "fast becoming known" is a bit vague and difficult to reference. How do you prove that something is "known"? How do you prove something is "fast becoming known?")
2. "Other notable successes have come in rifle shooting, baseball, soccer, women's softball, and swimming and diving." (no big deal, more a cite needed tag case but still could be given a more specific description)

This article needs additional citations for verification.

Let's see.. the only two references are:

Cite needed tags could be thrown all over the place but I thought it was better to just put the one ref tag at the top.

Places cite are especially needed to prove the claims:

I believe I'm the person that originally put the motto into this article way back in the day, but I'm now taking it out. I placed the motto there because I assumed that the university's seal would indicate the university's motto--this might not be the case. The university's seal is actually the state seal. While the state as a whole might use OPP as the motto, this doesn't mean the university does. Also, just because Latin is in the seal doesn't mean that the it's the motto (see the University of Arizona).

So I pulled it because I think it's safer/better to find out if the university has an actual motto rather than simply thinking that the state's motto simply carries over. Ommnomnomgulp (talk) 22:43, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
