Comprehensive universities

What is meant by Comprehensive university? Gregorydavid 15:05, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

In South Africa there are three types of university:
  • traditional universities, which are normal universities which grant degrees in fields like Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Law and so on. (That is, what most people globally mean when they talk about a "university"). In general, traditional universties have more theoretically-oriented programmes.
  • universities of technology (formerly known as technikons), which grant national diplomas and various other certificates on the National Qualifications Framework, as well as the BTech degree. Generally, universities of technology have more practically-oriented programmes.
  • comprehensive universities, which offer a combination of both types of programme.
This system is a result of the government's decision to merge some tertiary institutions together. In some cases, universities (like Rand Afrikaans University) were merged with Technikons (like Technikon Witwatersrand); the resulting institution was neither just a traditional university, nor just a university of technology; the term "comprehensive university" was chosen to describe this type of institution.
For (brief) references see [1], [2] or [3]. I suppose I should really write an article about this. - htonl 18:06, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Don't vandalize this page please.

I am taking down all the offensive comments that have been posted on this site including a statement about racism and a link to another University. Please, try to be civil and keep your political opinions out of Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 196.207.32.37 (talk) 13:27, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

University Size

The TUT, UJ and Tukkies pages all claim to be the largest contact university in South Africa. Could this matter be clarified? The TUT website does claim it has approximately 60 000 residential students1, Tukkies */- 38000 and I can't find the UJ numbers. I propose the matter be clarified and the page be edited in accordance. Any Comment?Purple Duke (talk) 15:36, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Contact University

What is a contact university? I've never heard of it before. There are traditionally "universities" (with class attendance) and "correspondence universities" (partly or no class attendance). In all universities there is contact between students and staff, and through various media between students in correspondence universities these days. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.168.146.226 (talk) 11:14, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Article needs expansion

I have added a banner to the page to encourage users to expand the article. As this article stands today it is a very poor representation of the University of Johannesburg and must be expanded to increase the universities international image. I suggest that contributors use articles from other well-known universities as a template for expansion (e.g. Yale University's Wikipedia page). --Sweetmat (talk) 11:34, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

I have since found a page on Wikipedia directly related to how university pages should be structured and written. I have added specific expansion banners where necessary in the article. Please use the following link as a guide: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:College_and_university_article_guidelines --Mattsan22 (talk) 14:29, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Hey guys, I've been extensively expanding the article wherever possible, I have removed banners for sections I've worked on, but I think this article still has a long way to go. Other than Damelin's article (that's where I go), I haven't really done much work on articles for educational institutions, but this one has the potential to be very good if we work together on it. Contact me at my user page if you have any suggestions or comments regarding my edits. Sweet! Aleksandar Bulovic' (talk) 21:11, 20 September 2013 (UTC)
