No Gold in 1896 edit
Why are the top winners listed as gold medal winners? There was no gold in 1896, only silver and copper, and no recognition for third place. Shouldn't this be fixed? GBC (talk) 13:50, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
- The IOC has retroactively declared the top three placers at early Olympics to be gold, silver, and bronze medal winners. This is discussed on the 1896 Summer Olympics article; perhaps a note to that effect would be helpful on the nation articles as well. -- Jonel (Speak to me) 00:59, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Nearly late for the games? edit
Is there any truth to the plot theme in "The First Olympics" TV mini-series that the Americans nearly were too late to compete at the Olympics?
According to the miniseries, when the American team's organizer went to the travel agency to book the athletes' trip to Athens, the travel agent read the dates on the poster, Apr 6-15, and converted them by adding 12 days - Apr 18-27 - and had the American Athletes arrive on April 14 or 15, three to four days before the starting date.
After the athletes departed, the American organizer and his wife had dinner with the Greek ambassador, who wondered why the effort was being made to send the athletes just to compete on the final day. In the ensuing discussion, "Mrs. Organizer" stated that the travel agent detected the "necessity" of making the adjustment from the poster, which he thought had Julian Calendar dates, to Gregorian Calendar dates. The Greek ambassador stated that the dates on the poster were the Gregorian dates - the Julian dates were March 25 to April 3.
Consequently, the American organizer had to rebook the travel to rush the athletes through, and telegraph them at the location they'd be coming ashore from their sea crossing. The athletes are depicted in the miniseries as arriving at the venue during the opening ceremonies. GBC (talk) 13:59, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
