Notable inmates & some other things edit

Really, almost none of the wikipedia pages on the 'famous' inmates confirm that they were ever incarcerated in Marion. Just pointing that out, maybe some citations on that list are needed? Additionally... maybe it should be mentioned that Marion mayor Robert Butler proposed that the captured 'combatants' from Guantanamo Bay could be transferred to Marion. It didn't go through I guess - (though it sounded logical to this Marion native... I trust those walls and the guards there) And... another thing. The surrounding area, the 'camp' I think it's called... I personally would love to see some more information on that. If you look at the satellite images of the prison - it's grounds are vast, and roads run through it that connect through the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge - and go to some very *interesting* non-public areas. For instance, there is a road running from the prison directly to a large open area with numerous 'bunkers' - and roads leading to the General Dynamics area... they're probably gated off or closed, but I've always wondered what's up with that. signed Midnite (I forgot my password sorry) 72.69.75.8 (talk) 06:19, 30 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pete Rose edit

Should we add that pete rose was here for a term

  • I added him, thanks!--Broux 19:54, 18 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Pete Rose wasn't part of the prison itself, but rather the minimum security farm, which literally doesn't even have a fence. 67.188.7.78 14:25, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Good point, indicates we should probably include a description regarding other areas around the prison itself, not just the main one--Broux 17:28, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • I just reviewed the article, it does mention a minimum security camp - should there be some clarification for Pete - I don't believe it's necessary - he was at "Marion"--Broux 20:40, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Maximum Security edit

This prison is widely reported on the internet as being maximum security, including on another Wikipedia page for Marion the town. However, this page introduces Marion as medium-security. This contradiction needs to be agreed, especially as it is within Wikipedia. IainUK (talk) 00:23, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • The Bureau of Prisons web page (http://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/mar/index.jsp) cites Marion as being a medium-security prison in its first sentence. It was downgraded back in 2006. The Marion supermax inmates were sent to Florence supermax. I would state that, barring any verb tenses, this page is correct and older pages referencing Marion should be updated.--Broux (talk) 22:02, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Marion No Longer Supermax edit

This information is wrong. Marion is no longer a supermax. It was downgraded to a medium security prison on September 12,2006, therefore all of the information regarding practices and prisoner activities is incorrect. Please update your information.

  • I've updated the section regarding the prison by removing specific detail to the different cell areas. I also removed rules regarding outside contact since I cannot locate or verify any of that type of information. --Broux 17:07, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wikiproject Prisons edit

If anyone is interested, I have proposed a new Wikiproject concerning prisons here.--Cdogsimmons (talk) 23:47, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Control Unit edit

Control Unit? What does it means? Please, answer...Валерий Пасько (talk) 14:08, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • Check the reference section - University of Massachusetts cite --Broux (talk) 19:00, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • Very concerningly under here i Find this "Actually, the facility was built to house the greatest escape risks as was Alcatraz and included in the 'majorty of offenders',very few in the Federal Bureau of Prions are incarcerated for sex offenses. It's likely that this author obtained this false information from the Bureau of Prisons. I cite myself as the authority here having served twenty-six years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons on a minor drug conviction." Not only is this somewhat unclear but is clearly using unreferenced original research. I will browse around the Fed Beuareau of Prisons to verify/edit what I can but otherwise will remove this quoted section as original research. SamC1404 (talk) 20:40, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Ok having re-read the thing a few times I have come to the conclusion that the above quoted is irrelevant here as the article states the purpose of the prison in the Construction section and the reason behind incarceration is written at the top(If someone knows any references for the offence demographics then it would be good to cite that), as a result I'm going to delete the above quoted but leave my contributions here if anyone wants to restore part or all of it. One Missing edit

"In 1975 five prisoners (Maurice Philion, Arthur Mankins, Michael Gargano, Edward Roche, and Dennis Hunter) walked out of the front door of the prison and escaped. One of them had been an electrician and over a period of time had been required to work on the lock mechanisms of all of the doors in the main corridors. He also converted a radio into a remote control, with which he opened all of the doors. One prisoner was recaptured within hours. Two gave themselves up after they became hungry. One made it to Canada, where he was arrested and imprisoned for separate charges." - that accounts for 4 of the 5, ... ? Although one could argue that the whole paragraph could go, as it lends nothing to the piece, other than being an interesting anecdote - it wasn't a precipitant to the supermax classification, none of the 5 is a prisoner of incredible note, etc. So, on more thought, why is it here - other than as filler? Contradictory edit

"The majority of the inmates housed at Marion are weapons and drug offenders. With the addition of a Sex Offender treatment program at Marion in 2006, the majority of prisoners are now Sex Offenders."

Which is it, weapons and drugs, or sex? These statements seem to be contradictory, and from the context, they both seem to apply to the period 2006-present. Thundermaker (talk) 17:03, 28 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Legal challenges edit

Recently, information about an ACLU legal challenge to the CMU was removed, without any info on the disposition of the case. I think there is enough material out there for a short section on legal challenges to the CMU. Center for Constitutional Rights just won their appeal in August, sending the case back to the lower court. The bulk of the details should probably go to Communication management unit, but as Marion is one of only two facilities that has one, a summary here is in order.
