Updated this article
editThis article and the article "Naval Armed Guard" duplicated the same subject. Looking at both articles, I merged the text from both articles into this page that now appears comprehensive. At the same time, I have made "Naval Armed Guard" a re-direct to this "United States Navy Armed Guard" article. Feel free to make improvements to this article.Wikited 22:37, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
World War I
editThough this article states that the Armed Guard was established in World War Two, I have come across references to Armed Guard units aboard ships during World War One, for example on USS St. Louis (1894). dawkeye (talk) 15:07, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- You are correct. The Naval Armed Guard was first organized in WWI. They served on 384 ships and were deactivated at the end of the war, and the 1919 Neutrality Act, Sec 6 prohibited the arming of US Merchant ships. In Nov 1941, this act was repealed and the USNAG was reactivated. Oldfarm (talk) 06:10, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
First Use Section
editDozens of American merchantmen with armed guards participated in WW1 so clearly the SS Larranga was not the first vessel with an armed guard to be used in war.--$1LENCE D00600D (talk) 04:33, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Needs a complete re-write
editThis article is nearly incoherent.
World War I or World War II?
Details of authorizing laws, military orders?
Equipment?
Personnel: numbers, ratings, casualties? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.175.208.243 (talk) 14:52, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Did armed guards have unit designations, or was each one instead considered a part of a ship's crew? Was there some overall command, training program, etc.? Terry Thorgaard (talk) 17:37, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
