Background info needed edit

This is a clearly biased statement with little (or no) substantiating evidence. The language is also clearly not objective, using words like "slaughter" and "assault" It reflects poorly on Wikipedia to have such an article present. I suggest it be removed immediately until it is revised or substantiated by better evidence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.227.185.187 (talk) 20:21, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

The possible motivation for the UN troops to engage in a massacre needs to be addressed. I believe the UN troops have been attacked in the past. If they thought the perpetrators were in the area, that could explain their actions. The nationalities of UN troops involved should also be given, along with links to stories on past UN clashes in Haiti. StuRat 23:45, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Inconsistency edit

To me the term "massacre" is inconsistent with casualties in the 50 range in such a densely populated area, where I would expect thousands of people to live. Such a low proportion of dead and wounded implies that the UN did attempt to limit collateral damage in their search for enemies. The population of the area which was sealed off is definitely an important fact that should be included in the article. StuRat 23:45, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bias edit

Much more material is given from the anti-UN point of view than in support of UN activities in Haiti. Links to articles discussing the level of violence prior to UN involvement in the war in Haiti would be relevant to defending the UN presence there. Also, statements about people being shot, without any info on whether they were hit by stray bullets or executed at point blank range, or even who shot them, is of limited value. No conclusions can be drawn from such statements. StuRat 23:45, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I have added a dispute tag in refrence to this discussion. I will come back and clean up some of this pov. Daniel J. Leivick 22:09, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Supplement edit

There has been a recent (July 28, 2005) request by the UN force commander in Haiti for personnel trained for operations in densely populated slum areas to reduce civilian casualties.

do you have a reference for this? Macho Philipovich 17:03, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Can anybody find any reliable NPOV sources on the MINUSTAH raid? All the news I can find on it, even at this late date, is from either a pro-Lavalas or pro-MINUSTAH site, except the Doctors Without Borders release, which is very ambiguous. Thanks, Billy P 17:01, 25 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Whatever the problems on both sides here, this article has a definite pro-coup/occupation slant. It is definitely in need of a NPOV -- which is quite possible in even a controversial article. I've seen it done, and well.

I completely agree that most of the article seems to be pro-MINUSTAH. That is why I tagged the Cite Soleil attack on here. The additional article is very, very good. I tried to be balanced myself, but I hope that it at least makes it clear that there is another side to this story. Billy P 21:19, 1 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Having read Brazilian sources, I find evidence that the concerns about MINUSTAH do not seem one-sidded, many Brazilian news sources presenting the same attitude of this article. Perhaps the solution could be to add a specific section of the article to "controversial issues regarding the MINUSTAH" such as its possible role as pro-coup/occupation and tool of imperialism. This way, the body of the article is more "dry" but a concern often expressed in the Press still receives due attention. 11:39, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Viva Chile

Chilean imperialism??!! Yeah, right! I think my country shouldn´t be in the following part: "to give an impression of legitimacy to the imperialist agenda of France, Canada, Chile and the U.S"

I'm not absolutely positive this is right, but isn't Mission des nations unies pour la stabilisation en Haiti Creole, not French? My only evidence is that I know someone who was once a member and they said it was Creole.

Merge with Operation Secured Tomorrow edit

The article Operation Secured Tomorrow should be merged with that one. They describe the same incidents. -- Magioladitis 08:55, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) began in 2004 and is continuing. The accronym MINUSTAH is commonly used in current news reports. On August 2, 2007 , the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon recommended an extension of the mandate of the UN forces in Haiti.(BBC NEWS) Sincerely, Mattisse 17:23, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Please do not include any unsourced material in this article. Thanks, --Mattisse 12:50, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bias concerns edit

Are there still concerns about bias in this article? And, if so, how can they be addressed so the POV tag can be removed? Sincerely, Mattisse 18:18, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is an overall very positive spin to the MINUSTAH presence (Haitians would say occupation) in Haiti, yet there are many available sources and exposés that reveal that the UN has done more to increase insecurity, instability, voter fraud, and helped to keep a dictatorship (ruling by decree as of January 2015) in power (Martelly/Paul) a foreign/international/US backed-regime, which was documented as being put in place under orders by then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

One pointed source of bias on this page (among many) of the pro-UN slant are photos. The link below is a photo showing the UN at its own mission (see their flag?), not helping Haitians during the earthquake, yet the caption says they are. This was typical of the actions they took after the earthquake. It is very telling of what the real agenda of the UN occupation in Haiti: hint, it is not the security and stability of the Haitian population. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Stabilisation_Mission_in_Haiti#/media/File:MINUSTAH_peacekeepers_continue_to_work_to_find_survivors_after_an_earthquake_%2812_january_2010%29.jpg Aidawedo (talk) 21:17, 1 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Brazilian and Chilean lead? edit

As far as I know, the lead was brazilian and Chile was only a contributor. And I don't even think Brazilis handling this no more since mission commander is from tunisia. Having this information in this same article, it should be updated and corrected.

Yes, you´re right. The lead is brazilian, and Chile is only contributing to the mission with limited personnel. I removed the citation. 201.22.161.211 (talk) 04:53, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

UN resolutions and reports edit

I wish I had time to boil down these UN reports and resolutions and make them fit into the article. I don't know how it's best done -- as a separate timeline of references, or with selected highlights. These docs are difficult to find, so do as you can with them. They go into a lot of details.Goatchurch 09:45, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

(Almost) No Information on Collapse? edit

I understand this is fairly recent, yet there still seems to be no information... Some figures might be useful. AriannaXO (talk) 17:13, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

There's also the related articles 2010 Haiti earthquake and Christopher Hotel... 76.66.197.17 (talk) 08:24, 16 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

{{2010 Haiti earthquake}}

I don't agree that this isn't strongly connected with the earthquake, since they are providing security to all the relief teams, and heavy construction equipment. 76.66.195.93 (talk) 06:48, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

UN resolutions and introduction VERY out of date edit

The introduction says the force will continue till 2012 but it's now 2014 and it's still going. The UN resolutions section only goes until 2010. The whole section is disorganized. I propose that someone list every UN SC resolution about Haiti and explain them, including the resolutions that extended the mandate. The mandate was last extended by resolution 2119 to 15 October 2014, incidentally. The U.N. website should have a list of all the relevant resolutions. This is a good place to start: http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/missions/minustah/facts.shtml

On a side-note I've read the article and I'm still not sure what MUNISTAH is doing in Haiti. It's clearly doing something, as the SC resolutions all say it's vital to security in Haiti. This is a criticism of this Wikipedia page: it's very confusing. Must be one of the worst I've ever read.

Removed warning box about out-of-date info edit

The article seems to be mostly up-to-date now, as much as an article about a complex ongoing situation can be. The one really out-of-date section is the one about UN reports and resolutions, which I'd say is the least important or informative part of the article, and in any case keeping up with all the reports that the UN writes about itself would be a near-impossible task.

Inaccuracy edit

I served on this mission, twice. It should get a total rewrite. I wouldn’t quote information from this page for any academic research. 203.153.114.158 (talk) 12:13, 12 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I'm not very experienced at this, but some sections describe the late 2010s as the future. Just feel like this should be solved, but don't feel I am qualified to do so. If I'm completely out of it feel free to tell me. Mlayap (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
