What does this mean? "But a pastoral instruction of Noailles forbade his priests under pain of suspension to accept the Bull without his authorization; that was condemned by Rome." amount of a bribe edit

"The number of appellants is said to have reached 1,800 to 2,000, pitifully small, for the approximately 1,500,000 livres ($300,000) distributed as bribes." Taking the 1800 figure, that's $167 per person. Is that a lot of money? I wonder where the word "pitifully" fits in. --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 00:49, 15 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
