There exists an illustration of the vessel that would be excellent for this entry, visible at SeacoastNH.com; however, I am unsure if this image is fair game for inclusion. This image is by Bill Gilkerson, possibly of the late 1990s, probably produced for inclusion in a book of some kind. I cannot seem to locate another copy of this image elsewhere, except at the now-defunct Ranger Foundation (which was only found through a Google image search). Huntster 04:12, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Maine, not New Hampshire edit
The article says USS Ranger was built in New Hampshire, but the box on the right says Maine. "The History of the American Sailing Navy" by Howard I. Chapelle, Bonanza Books, New York (W. W. Norton) 1949, says Built by James K. Hackett, Portsmouth, NH. However, "Minstrelsy of Maine" by Fanny Hardy Eckstorm and Mary Winslow Smyth, Houghton Mifflin (Riverside Press Cambridge, Mass.) 1927 has two versions of a ballad about Ranger (though one, for reasons unknown, calls her The Stately Southerner). A note by the collectors -- probably by Mrs. Smyth -- says Ranger, the first war vessel to fly the Stars and Stripes, was built on Badger's Island, which is in Maine (though across from Portsmouth), and a bronze tablet marks the spot.2604:2000:2907:8700:1C52:20B:CB03:B665 (talk) 15:49, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Badger's Island near Navy Yard Future site. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was authorized by a Federal US government and Founded in 1800 or 1801 on Seavy Island a short distance down river from the RANGER's build site - a private Shipyard. Also note John Paul Jones was the prospective commanding officer and government superintendant of her construction. Today different persons and entities perform those functions. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is in the State of Maine. Shipyards and Navy Yards often carry the Name of the closest city but are in seperate towns. Norfolk Naval Shipyard is in Portsmouth Virginia - accross the Elizabeth River from Norfolk 2601:19E:4081:B140:0:0:0:ADB6 (talk) 03:31, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
