Gonna get stuck into this this afternoon. Initial impressions are good, so should be smooth sailing, I think. Cheers! Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 14:07, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Early life and high school career edit

  • Recruiting boxes are often a messy business in College BBall articles, from what I've seen... Got a few problems here:
    • No 247Sports ref.
    • Rivals says 5/9/18 not 5/5/18 for commit date
    • The 2019 Team Ranking Rivals ref isn't working properly, I don't think -- doesn't show anything it should do, anyway
    • None of the sources mention the given overall recruiting rankings (Rivals: 10, 247Sports: 10, ESPN: 13)
    • The box says it'll take the average of the heights, but Rivals says 6'4", ESPN says 6'2", and the box has 6'2" too. (Of course the aforementioned need for a 247Sports ref could very well make this point moot if it too says 6'2" :))
      • I've ripped out the recruiting box entirely and replaced it with prose. The formatting is made for team pages, not individual players, and is ultimately not worth the headache.
  • I feel like it merits mentioning in the prose that he committed to Kentucky several months before signing his LOI. The given source already says "Maxey orally pledged to Kentucky in May ..." so doesn't even need any additional ref for it
    • Added.

College career edit

  • The agency parameter of {{cite news}} is only for wire services like AP; the 76ers themselves don't qualify. This in re "Team Signs Maxey, Joe, Reed", ref 22 at time of writing.
    • Removed

2020–21 season: Rookie season edit

  • I think rookie scale contract warrants a wikilink; it wasn't immediately clear to me, as someone who's not totally familiar with the NBA salary cap, what that meant without searching it manually.
    • Linked
  • Should "regular-season" be hyphenated? I've never spelt it with one personally, and Season (sports)#Regular season would agree
    • I've seen it both ways in hockey articles, but removed the hyphen for consistency
  • "Tyrese Maxey Expected to Throw First Pitch at Phillies Game Saturday", ref 30, mentions that he was projected as a lottery pick at first. That feels worth mentioning to me, for the start of this section.
  • This whole section being one paragraph feels a bit long -- I'd feel inclined to split it, either before or after the part about his first start vs the Nuggets.
    • Chose to split just before the part about his first start
  • Would probably mention who eliminated the Sixers from the playoffs, personally.
    • Added

2021–22 season: Improving as a sophomore edit

  • Would probably mention that they actually defeated the Raptors, instead of jumping straight ahead to losing to the Heat.
    • I didn't write the postseason section initially, so I've rewritten it to conform to standards
  • "(second leading scorer for the 76ers)" failed verification for me; indeed, I believe it's false, per this, which has him top in both points and PPG.
    • See above

National team career edit

  • My sole concern with this entire section is the use of SBNation, which has no real consensus as to its reliability, as far as I'm aware. Given its relationship with Vox Media, I'm inclined to think it's okay, and I won't ding it here, but should you ever want to push on to WP:FA, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you faced some fiercer pushback over it.
    • I have no intentions of taking this to FA until far later in Maxey's career. I actually hope to reignite the conversation around the use of SBNation as a reliable source at some point, as the "community posts" are separate from the articles written by reputable sportswriters. In any case, the information in the article is taken directly from a media interview, so it should be fine.

Career statistics edit

  • No refs in this section. I know it's generally implied that it's cited via the basketball-reference source included in the infobox, but I believe it's best practice to repeat it as an inline ref within each table as well -- see, for example, the FA-level Magic Johnson's equivalent section.
    • Added for all

Personal life edit

  • "OSU basketball: Isaac Likekele, Chris Harris Jr. are part of the Baggage Claim Boys", ref 49, is redirecting to the home page for me, suggesting it might be dead -- however, as I'm UK-based (and I don't mean Kentucky :)), it may be a geo-fencing issue. If it works for you, it needs |url-access=limited to indicate not every part of the world can access it; if it's dead, it either needs a new URL, or |url-status=dead instead of live. (On the plus side, no verification issues thanks to the supplied archive, thank you!)
    • The reference works fine for me (The Oklahoman was recently taken over by Gannett and as such had all of its URLs transferred over), but I added the url parameter anyway, as any Gannett publication gives you 5 freebies before you have to make an account.

As suspected, no major issues at all; should very quickly be up to grade. Prose is professional and concise. It is lacking one thing in terms of MOS-adherence: per MOS:ACCIM, images need to have alt text supplied, for vision-impaired readers and/or those using screen readers. See MOS:ALT for advice on how to add that.

Referencing is broadly perfect throughout the prose, just the one aforementioned verification issue there, but there are the issues with the recruiting & career stats tables. That said, it shouldn't be a problem to fix.

Coverage is appropriate: broad where there's coverage, and concise for the less notable parts of his career. I always think this is one of the harder things to gauge when writing a sports bio, particularly with regards to WP:RECENTISM, but for a player so early in his career, I have no issue with it as is. Perhaps if he plays 15 years it may need reconsidering, but that's a long way away, and WP:CRYSTAL, etc. etc.

No POV concerns; where there are potential MOS:PUFFERY issues (e.g. "breakout", or " immediate positive impact"), I was able to verify the source's use of those specific words, or something close enough. No stability issues at all: no edit wars, no large quantity of editing since season end. I've checked the images, and all have appropriately verified free licensing, as confirmed by the bots that track Flickr pages.

That's your lot. With these fixes, I'll be very happy to pass it. Any questions, just ping. Cheers! Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 15:38, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey Buttons to Push Buttons, just wanted to let you know that I'm moving on Friday! Just across the city, so not a huge deal, but I'll be otherwise occupied the next few days and may not get to all the fixes within the suggested 7-day time frame. — GhostRiver 03:48, 8 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's absolutely fine -- I'd already peeked at your talk page and saw your notice about your injury, and was plenty happy to give you extra time for that alone if needed. Hope the move goes well, and your recovery's progressing smoothly! Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 02:44, 9 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Buttons to Push Buttons Sorry for the delay. Everything has been addressed, including the alt text. — GhostRiver 14:58, 18 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
No worries at all -- haven't been around much this week, so the timing actually worked out better for me in the end. :) Have checked through, and verified the changes with their refs, and have no remaining concerns. Very happy to pass it. Congrats, great work! Buttons to Push Buttons (talk | contribs) 01:33, 19 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
