This entry does not explain the literal meaning of a turkey shoot. It is a sporting event whereby one or more live turkeys--either confined to a pen or tied down by one leg--are used as targets. These take place before thanksgiving.

- That is correct. James Fenimore Cooper describes a literal turkey shoot in his book "The Pioneers" and gives it a bad connotation as something that is unsportsman-like. Mgmt1969 (talk) 22:00, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
- I just read the scene, and I didn't get the connotation of it being unsportsman like. To win required striking the turkey's head or neck at 100 yards, and it took an extremely skilled marksman to succeed. 24.218.115.184 (talk) 19:08, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
