Criticism section

edit

Not sure what to do with this. It was entirely unsourced. I've added sources for the road switch controversy (and fixed a mistake there), but for the rest, I'm wary about leaving unsourced controversial statements in the biographical article of a living politician. Unless they can be properly sourced, they should probably be removed. Also, why is the picture of him with Rice placed in the "Criticism" section? Aridd (talk) 09:40, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've looked through the page's edit history, and found who added the "criticism" material. I've left a note on their talk page. It was a one-time editor, though, so we may not get a reply. If no sources are provided, I'll probably remove the controversial material in a few days, unless anyone disagrees. Aridd (talk) 09:50, 4 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm on self-enforced wikibreak so I can't log in, but I've removed the material in question. As well as the image, which seemed incongruous in that section. Aridd, August 19, 2009. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.6.45 (talk) 14:59, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

oops infobox - can someone fix please?

edit

I tried to change the wording in the infobox which is wrong. i.e. It has 'President' (wrong) instead of 'Head of State' (correct)...but that bit has disappeared - can someone please alter the word without making that section disappear in the template. Thank you. Teine Savaii (talk) 05:27, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

ʻOkina and naming

edit

Should Malielegaoi's name be spelled "Tuilaʻepa Saʻilele Malielegaoi", or perhaps "Tuilaepa Saʻilele Malielegaoi", both of which can be seen (although with bogus ʻokinas) in Facebook's recent newsfeed about a proposed constitutional change? Peter Chastain [¡habla!] 12:27, 21 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Peter Chastain::

There is an 'okina in his title "Tuila'epa" and in his first name "Sa'ilele". But from 1962 to 2012, Education Ministry doesn't demand the writing of 'okina in the Samoan words. Nowadays, most publishers put an apostrophe and more rarely the official sign (reverted comma). Anymway, Tuila'epa and Aiono are not part of his name, but titles (like Sir, for the second one, matai's name).--RotachZ (talk) 12:29, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Naming

edit

With correct 'okina signs, his full denomination is Tuila'epa Lupesoliai Neioti Aiono Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, but his name is only Sa'ilele Malielegaoi. Tuila'epa and Aiono are honorific titles, used when speaking or writing about a person, like Sir or Mr. (and Aiono is rarely used by RNZ or Samoa Observer).--RotachZ (talk) 12:34, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm quite happy for it to be renamed Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, which seems to be the most commonly-used form in English-language sources (hence complying with WP:COMMONNAME). But there is already a redirect from that, so people can just link to it that way already.--IdiotSavant (talk) 23:47, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you are happy to admit that the Common name is not Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele Malielegaoi (as I wrote since the beginning), you should be happy also to use the 'okina signs, used by main sources. As I wrote it elsewhere, we aren't in the situation of Prince Harry, where Prince is part of his common name, but a quite remote and unknown (outside Samoa) title of Samoa (written Tuila'epa and not Tuilaepa). Tuila'epa is also the short way to name him to avoid his full name.--RotachZ (talk) 06:54, 31 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Since 31 May, no further comment on my proposal. So I will move the page to Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, for the following reasons:
  • use of 'okina in Samoan language (compulsory since 2012);
  • not common use of Aiono (title and not name);
  • most of the media call him Tuila'epa Dr Sa'ilele Malielegaoi like here.
Waiting for any comment or proposal...--RotachZ (talk) 06:44, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tuilaepa Aiono Sailele MalielegaoiTuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi – As per above discussion and Common Name rules. Aiono is only a title, rarely used by media (in Samoa and NZ). RotachZ (talk) 06:55, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Birth Date

edit

I am reading a copy of his memoirs ("Pālemia: Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi of Samoa: A Memoir"), where Malielegaoi writes "So I picked up the old book [from his Church, recording all births] and flicked the pages back to 1945 and my name was absent. [...] I went back to 1944 and my name was there, the 14th of February 1944. So that is my real birth date". There is confusion on his birth date as his father altered the birth date to allow him to attend a primary school, which propagated forward to being on his birth certificate etc. The actual date of his birth is over a year earlier than what sources, including the Government of Samoa and Wikipedia state. I'm uncomfortable editing this myself, as I'm unsure how to note this in the infobox -- I assume a footnote explaining it? MrSeabody (talk) 05:59, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

No response after about two weeks, so per WP:BEBOLD I've gone ahead and made the changes with an explanatory footnote. MrSeabody (talk) 10:40, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
