Panhe and Trestles

edit

I think the connection between Pahne and Trestles needs to be made clearer for those like myself who are not familiar with the history of the area. - Mark Dixon (talk) 04:13, 29 January 2009 (UTC) REPLY: Updated this section with your comments in mind.--LexVacPac3 04:20, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

The statement "Panhe is also important to all Californians and Americans" is not supported by the citation referenced, which says "It’s easy to see how Panhe’s importance, both historical and as a modern gathering place for Acjachemen ceremonies, might be overlooked..." and "The debate about the proposed toll road centered on potential damage to a favorite surfing spot and the fate of the endangered Pacific pocket mouse. Less mentioned was Panhe...". 75.84.233.209 (talk) 17:47, 4 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The description of Middles is incorrect. I think there should be some description of where Trestles got its name....the actual dilapidated railroad trestles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.4.27.151 (talk) 17:09, 15 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Question

edit

In the article it says, about the beach evening primrose plants, "they produce a burrow ". What is this intended to mean? Rabbits make a burrow, but as far I know, plants don't. Invertzoo (talk) 01:37, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 12 October 2021

edit
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: (non-admin closure) MOVED to Trestles (surfing). Consensus that Trestles should point to the disambiguation page. No clear consensus between various disambiguation terms; I am choosing the one that doesn't rely on WP:USPLACE interpretation -- nobody has objected to Trestles (surfing). Some discussion of moving the DAB page, but that would require a follow-up RM proposal. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 02:01, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

TrestlesTrestles, California – not the primary topic topic for "Trestles". See pageviews comparison, where Trestle table gets slightly more views, and Trestle bridge gets twice as many. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:48, 12 October 2021 (UTC).Reply

Let's take the worst case for Trestle wrongfooting every reader. Taking those hits off, and the hits at the DAB (i.e. assuming every reader arrives there from the hatnote at trestle bridge), the trestle bridge is still the primary topic for "Trestle" by page views.
But I don't think you can extend that inference that readers searching for "Trestles" want trestle bridges, which gets the lowest number of hits of all. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 17:10, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I think the proposal here is to have no primary topic for the plural rather than redirecting to the table (given the singular redirects to the bridge) would you support that alternative instead? Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:22, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
{{ping|Croch, Swale}} I'm not sure what you're proposing here. "Trestles is a collection...", says the first sentence, so it's not a plural, I think. You're more the expert on geo names than me, but isn't it like e.g. Marina Bay Sands?
If we need to disambiguate between the surf spots and other things that can be put into plural, why can't we do that at the singular's DAB? As far as usage in Wikipedia goes, my recent experience of checking the existing links to Trestle would suggest that when it's used in plural (by sticking an S after the link) it's almost always the wrong link. Not surprisingly, since rarely are trestle bridges referred to collectively. But see my comment below about the singular. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 20:17, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm proposing that we redirect Trestles (after moving) to the singular DAB namely Trestle (disambiguation) per WP:DABCOMBINE. My reference to "plural" was that "trestles" is the plural form of "trestle" with respect to the bridge and table meanings not that the place is a plural form of these but the title (Trestle) is just like Cars (film) being of Car even though the film its self isn't plural. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:52, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. First, this is not a settlement or populated place, so WP:USPLACE does not apply and the comma disambiguation would be misleading. More importantly, there is no other article that would take the WP:PRECISE title "Trestles" and evidence suggests that the large majority of readers are landing on the article they want; namely the very low number of readers clicking on the hatnote, and the fact that all but one of the 55+ incoming wikilinks appear to intend this article (I fixed the one), and the fact that a Google search brings up mostly surfing topics on the first page. I went through Trestles' "what links here", and found four incorrect links in article space (out of 52, now 48). I've only just started doing the same with the far-more-numerous links at trestle.
For Trestle, I changed 45 links out of approx. 360 (now approx. 320). Most of these I've retargeted to trestle support, about ten to trestle bridge where the immediately following word was "bridge", it was piped as "trestle bridge" (this is not WP:NOTBROKEN), or it was in an infobox or "See also", so not technically incorrect but clearer. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 20:26, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've noticed that most of the correct links are in articles for U.S. places (a few from Australia, Canada and Japan), so perhaps this is WP:ENGVAR. Of British place, it seems to be restricted to use in southwestern England, Wales, and northeastern England; a couple in Scotland. Most online dictionaries seem silent on the matter, though Collins marks only the American English usage as "civil engineering" (implying that in British English it is more widely used), which seems the opposite to what I see at Wikipedia. lexico.com (OED) doesn't list the shortened meaning for "trestle bridge" at all, in either the UK or US dictionaries. (It lists it as the supporting structure for a bridge.)85.67.32.244 (talk) 18:54, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'd support moving the DAB over Trestle. Note it's Trestles, California not Trestle, California so it would move to Trestles (California) – typo? Despite the page views, I don't think that "trestle bridge" is the primary meaning for "trestle", but I've little evidence to suggest otherwise. As I noted above, perhaps this is WP:ENGVAR. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 20:17, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, corrected, I meant the plural for the place with the brackets DAB. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:52, 12 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Work to be done – I undid the retargeting of Trestles to the disambig page. All the articles that link through it need to be fixed first. Dicklyon (talk) 03:19, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@BrownHairedGirl, Ortizesp, 162 etc., Crouch, Swale, Necrothesp, In ictu oculi, and Tiggerjay: Any volunteers to fix the 40+ uses of the Trestles redirect before retargeting it to the disambig page? Dicklyon (talk) 03:40, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Well, normally, the database queries on "highly linked DAB pages" trigger and somebody quickly clears them up with AWB. But Dicklyon has reverted me three times, so the database queries won't trigger. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 03:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's not a process I'd ever heard of. You indicated it might take days to months. Is it good to leave so many links broken for so long? The current state is not wrong, just some people want to see it changed. Dicklyon (talk) 04:36, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • I have disambiguated all the backlinks, in these 51 edits, and also restored the redirect to the dab page.[1]
@Dicklyon should have upheld the WP:CONSENSUS by helping to disambiguate the links, instead of WP:EDITWARring ([2], [3], [4]) to revert a change which has consensus. In particular, the fact that Dicklyon edit-warred against a consensus which they had opposed[5] looks like WP:IDHT, especially since they misrepresented the situation as just some people want to see it changed which is a deceptive obfuscation of the fact that a consensus has been found after a duly-notified discussion. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:02, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Hey, thanks for fixing! And for the obnoxious comments here and elsewhere about my good-faith attempt to keep the process in order instead of breaking things. Dicklyon (talk) 15:26, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would have fixed them all with DisamAssist had I been online as I normally do with RMs that I have nominated or supported and if the redirect goes to the place then its not possible to use this and they won't be flagged up by the DPL project etc. The fact that at least 10% of the links were originally incorrect (the IP fixed 4, Station1 fixed 1 and BHG fixed one) is more evidence of a lack of primary topic. Having 45 links pointing to the DAB is no big deal but I wouldn't expect Dicklyon to help fix since they opposed the move but they shouldn't have changed the redirect back to the place. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:12, 31 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I was trying to help, by preventing breakage. And the fact that 10% of links were wrong is support for the idea that the fix is not automatic. Anyway, glad it's done now. And yeah, to be clear, I was against it and still think the reasons for this move were bogus; I almost always prefer disambiguation over primarytopic claims, but not this one, for the reason I stated. Dicklyon (talk) 01:02, 1 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well I think you're argument was effectively countered in that I showed that the others like the bridge are also "Trestles". Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:14, 2 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't see how your statement "Trestles appears in both the bridge and table articles" was relevant then, or now. Nobody is contesting the close. Dicklyon (talk) 04:10, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
