Merge with Watch? edit

Currently, there's no separate wristwatch page, just watch. It seems like this article could productively be merged in to the history sections about the wristwatch specifically. Currently, there's a confusion separation across articles of discussion of trench watches, "wristlets" (which exists as a disambig page), and wristwatches. Flagging this for future interested parties. Suriname0 (talk) 16:45, 24 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Reliable source for Rolex trench watch claim edit

Hey User:Opok2021, thanks for trying to improve the sourcing on the trench watch and Rolex articles around their WWI production of watches.

  • Regarding the Forbes Contributor piece, this is unfortunately a self-published source. See WP:FORBESCON for how to identify self-published Forbes pieces; unfortunately, this is basically someone's personal blog. We could potentially include it if the author was independently known as an expert on the topic, but I couldn't verify that here.
  • The original source that myself and another editor removed was to an online storefront. First, it doesn't have a lot of the qualities we look for in a reliable source, such as a clear author and publication date, or evidence of editorial oversight. We should avoid links to online storefronts (see WP:VENDOR), because they can be mistaken for WP:CITESPAM and are often less reliable than independent sources.
  • Okay, but to the actual issue at hand: did Rolex make trench watches during WWI? I would love to add this claim if we can support it, but I don't see any clear evidence in reliable sources that it's true. For example, there are no hits on JSTOR, Google Scholar, Wikipedia:Newspaperarchive.com, or the Wikipedia Library for "trench watch" + Rolex. None of the sources I could find on Google (like the Forbes piece, or various online store-fronts) cite any sources that we could consult. I found two mentions in opinion pieces in The Mail on Sunday, which we also can't use as a reliable source (WP:MAILONSUNDAY). I suspect we may need to consult older non-digital sources to support this claim. But for now, I'm coming up empty.

Thanks for your response and help. There don't seem to be any sources I can use. I'll try and find some, but they are very few and far between. Opok2021 (talk) 15:10, 26 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
