Did the Irish treaty ports remain part of the United Kingdom between 1922-38 or were they Irish Free State territory with operational control retained by the British? JAJ 00:55, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Extent of the ports

Did the area under British control consist of the whole of the cities/towns, or just the port facilities? --Jfruh (talk) 22:38, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm fairly sure that it was just the port facilities under British control, seizing control of an Irish town would have provoked hostility. Taoiseach :)

Just limited to "such harbour and other facilities" in times of peace - with no mention of towns and cities, only the three mentioned ports within the Irish Free State in the Annex of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Djegan 16:06, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Screw chruchill. He talks of giving up something for nothing. No one in the 26 counties wanted Britain to have anything. What right do they have, except by naked force of threat of force, did Britain have to keep anything in Ireland. Churchill's reaction

Why are the words "sentinel towers of the western approaches" emphasised in the text of Churchill's speech? The Hansard record of the speech does not show any such emphasis[1]. Drawing attention to a particular phrase, however well crafted, in a quotation of a speech doesn't appear appropriate for an encyclopedia - or is there a WP justification for it?
