Section Needs Revision

Perhaps the whole article should be revised. For one it does not show dates around the world. Only dates for Europe, which is not good. There should be a way to organize this (into multiple articles or some kind of sub section).

There should be something about why there is a transfer window, i.e. what the justification for having it was supposed to be. Yeah, I know Be Bold, but the entire reason I came to the article was to find out, and there seems little help on a number of other sites I tried to find a reason. I can find other sides explaining how it works as well, and there is a huge amount of hits in any search including the term transfer window of course, but none explain why it was brought in, apart from suggesting it was in European football for at least some time previously (FIFAs site particularly is a nightmare to try and find this sort of stuff on). --81.150.229.68 (talk) 12:23, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Are the reasons for having transfer windows: I haven't yet done enough reliable research to write a section in the main article. But so far, what I've found indicates that the system of transfer windows was introduced (in 2002/2003) in response to conflict between FIFA and the European Union.

According to EU employment laws, employees must be free to change employers at any time. It is illegal for an employer to demand or impose a fee for allowing an employee to leave. Based on this, the EU threatened to dismantle the entire transfer system that had been in place in football. (As far as I can find out, the previous system was that players could be transferred at any time, subject to fees being agreed.)

However, FIFA did not want to abandon the entire system. (I can imagine there were many reasons, apart from those stated publicly!) The reason given publicly was that it wanted each transferred player to stay at his new club for a minimum of one year. This was supposedly to ensure some consistency and fairness in team selections, to prevent a situaton where a club might buy or sell players weekly or monthly depending on its needs. (How this sits with the previous system, is not clear to me. If I understand it correctly, under previous system, players could transfer at any time, subject to fees being agreed.)

So FIFA proposed the introduction of transfer windows, as a way of ensuring that players stay at a club for a minimum period of time, while being free to move around while the windows are open.

Of course, none of this addresses issues related to transfer fees and contract enforcement, which (according to my underdstanding) should be illegal under EU law.

I understand sports organizations want to ensure that clubs do not strengthen their teams towards the end of a season, when some clubs know they will be playing in important finals (and therefore are motivated to buy more top players), while other clubs know they have missed out for the year (and therefore culd be motivated to sell some 'surplus' players). A transfer window achieves this (though in some other sports, the 'open window' occupies most of the season, which is the inverse of the football system).

But other methods could also be devised. For example, transfers could be allowed to occur at any time, but clubs could be restricted from actually fielding players in some cases. For instance, let's say there is one month of the season left, and Club A is appearing in the semi-final, and possibly the final, of an important competition. The club could buy (hire?) new players during this period: this would respect the EU's insistence on freedom of employment. But the club would not allowed to field those new players during the restricted period (which might be 'until the start of the next season', or 'for a period of X months', or some such thing): this would respect FIFA's stated desire to preserve 'fairness of competition'.

The restricted period could even be dependent on how long the player had been with the previous club: a minimum of two months, but longer if the player had been at the previous club less than one year (for example, the restricted period could be the greater of (a) two months, or (b) one year minus the length of time at the previous club). Of course, the player would still receive wages from the new club, they just wouldn't be able to field him.

The restricted period could even be varied for different types of competition: for example, the rule of two months (stated above) could be applied to league competitions; but for something like the European Champions Cup, players could not be fielded once the knockout stage of the competition has begun; or, for the FA Cup, they could not be fielded once a team has made it to the quarter-final stage.

I think this would prevent a purely mercenery system in which some players could set themselves up as "hired guns". Under this system, I can't see the need for transfer fees at all.

Sources for Italy and Spain transfer window

I have inserted Italy and Spain in the first table for including all major European leagues, but citation is still missing. What are the translations of "transfer window" or "registration period" to Italian/Spanish? These would be good Google starting points. Kq-hit (talk) 07:02, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

The table is wrong in regards to Italy. Serie A winter transfer is the same as England, Jan 1 through Jan 31. The only difference is that English transfers end at midnight and Italian transfers end at 5pm. Slakas (talk) 13:44, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Discrepancies between FIFA regulations and application of the law

Where these exist, it would be good to have them explained. For example, why is the mid-season window for most of Europe the whole of January, and 2 extra days this year (i.e. 33 days), when the rules say "may not exceed four weeks"? But the FIFA regulation cited says that the mid-season window "may not exceed four weeks". 4 weeks is 28 days. On what authority is it extended to 31 days, yet alone 33, and maybe a bit more if it is too snowy to send a fax? Kevin McE (talk) 21:42, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

English Transfer Window

Rationale behind transfer windows

What this article badly lacks is any discussion of what transfer windows are for and why teams cannot simply buy and sell players at any time. There must have been some pressing need that was met by bringing all this in, even if the system's merits are disputed by many. Someone on this talk page above has had a go at explaining some of the things the article skips over, but this really needs to be in the article, supported by good sources. Until something is incorporated, I as an average uninformed reader am left scratching my head about this concept. Credulity (talk) 16:26, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
