In view of the recent developments in trading and commercial practices and to give effect to important judicial pronouncements, a need for simplification and harmonization of trademark management systems was felt.
this is too vague. the reader cannot guess what the recent devlopments or judicial pronouncements are. Further, developments may not be 'recent' as a new law was passed in 1999, as noted in the article.

It may be worthwhile to have another subheading or section that contrasts trade dress protection to the protections afforded with design patents and copyrights. There's a broad comparison section on the Trademark page, but addressing design patents in particular (as well as mentioning copyright) would highlight the subtle differences as well as the confusing overlap of these three IP regimes.
