Talk:Totsuka-no-Tsurugi

Hello. I'm Japanese, often editting Japanese Wikipedia. I want to point out a problem of this article.

"Totsuka-no-Tsurugi" is not the name of the legendary sword that "Susanoo" use to defeat the "Yamata no Orochi", but general noun that means "Ten-hands Long Sword". The proof of this is that, in "Kojiki" and "Nihon Shoki", the word "Totsuka-no-Tsurugi" appears many times in various ages and various places, and sometimes Totsuka-no-Tsurugis were even lost or broken.

For example, before Susanoo defeated the Yamata no Orochi, He and his sister "Amaterasu" held the ceremony called "Ukei" to satisfy her doubts about him. In this ceremony, he held out his Totsuka-no-Tsurugi to her, and she crunched and shattered it.

Now, I'll explain some of Totsuka-no-Tsurugis that have its peculiar name.

"Ame-no-Ohabari"(天之尾羽張)

This is the sword that "Izanagi" used to kill "Kagu-tsuchi". In Kojiki and Nihonsyoki, It was also treated as a Kami with his personarity. As a kami, he is the Father of "Takemikazuchi". It has some aliases;"Itsu-no-Ohabari(伊都之尾羽張)", "Ame-no-Ohabari-no-Kami(天之尾羽張神)" , "Itsu-no-Ohabari-no-Kami(伊都之尾羽張神)". Ame-no-Ohabari means "Takamagahara's sword with a spreading tip". Itsu-no-Ohabari means "powerful sword with a spreading tip". Ame-no-Ohabari-no-Kami and Itsu-no-Ohabari-no-Kami are its names as Kami.

"Ame-no-Habakiri(天羽々斬)"

This is the most famous Totsuka-no-Tsurugi that Susanoo used to kill the Yamata no Orochi. "Haba(羽々)" is not "wings" but "Orochi" in old Japanese, so Ame-no-Habakiri means "Takamagahara's (sword) that cut down the Orochi"(, or "Takamagahara's Orochi-slayer" :-) ).This sword has many aliases;"Ame-no-Haekiri(天蝿斫斬)", "Orochi-no-Aramasa(蛇麁正)", "Orochi-no-Karasahi-no-Tsurugi(蛇韓鋤剣)", "Futsushi-Mitama(布都斯魂)", "Futsu-no-Mitama(布都御魂)", and so on. "Futsu-no-Mitama" is usually a name of an another sword that I'll refer later, but in "Isonokami Futshu-no-Mitama Shrine(in Okayama Prefecture)" that is dedicated to Ame-no-Habakiri, it is called Futsu-no-Mitama. On the other hand, in "Isonokami Futshu-no-Mitama Shrine(in Nara Prefecture)",that is dedicated to Ame-no-Habakiri and Futsu-no-Mitama, Ame-no-Habakiri is called Futsushi-Mitama and clearly distinguished from Futsu-no-Mitama.

"Futsu-no-Mitama(布都御魂)"

This is the sword that Takemikazuchi used to subjugate "Ashihara no Nakatsukuni". After this subjugation, In the battle of "Emperor Jimmu" and "Nagasunehiko", "Takakuraji" was given this sword and ordered to hand it over Emperor Jimmu by Takeikazuchi in his dream. By the power of it, Emperor Jimmu's soldiers that had fainted away recovered consciousness, and eneimies were cut down automatically. "Futsu" is an onomatopoeia of cutting sound,"Mitama" means soul. This sword has many aliases too; "Kunimukeshi-Tsurugi(平国之剣)", "Saji-Futsu-no-Kami(佐士布都神)", "Mika-Futsu-no-Kami(甕布都神)", and so on. Kunimukeshi-Tsurugi means "the sword of subjugation".
