Can anyone please explain why this lemma holds both the text (at least the title) of the genus, and of the species? Thanks, --Dick Bos (talk) 13:51, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is because the genus is monotypic. When there is only one species in the genus, there is rarely any additional information available at the genus level that does not also apply to the species, so by convention we combine the two articles. This is further extended to multiple monotypic ranks, such that a monospecific family will have only one article that covers the family, genus, and species together.
The article of a monotypic taxon will be placed at the lowest rank, except genera - which are kept at genus level. There are further exceptions for when the species article would be at a common (vice scientific) name, or when the genus name is at a disambiguator. See WP:MONOTYPICFAUNA.
