Citation needed. It's actually more complicated than currently described: "'tɔpsəm" is also favoured by 'elite incomers' who buy into the cachet of an insider pronunciation. And because these are the class of people that write guides and are consulted for articles, the idea that "'tɔpsəm" is correct is greatly over-represented in print sources. I've no idea where you'd find verification for that, though. 217.44.18.51 (talk) 03:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Both Topsham, Maine (named in 1717) and Topsham, Vermont (chartered 1763) pronounce their name /ˈtɒpsəm/. It seems more than likely that this was the 18th-century pronunciation in Devon also. It would be interesting to know when the shift to the current English spelling pronunciation (with /ʃ/ instead of /s/) occurred. -- ABehrens (talk) 03:48, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Etymology

edit

Ham in a place name is generally considered to be from Old High German (the language that came to England in the 5th century with the Saxon settlers) as meaning a settlement or village. However, the Old Norse meaning of Ham or Hamn is particularly a settlement on a river estuary or fjord and was therefore a port or haven. In modern Swedish Hamn means harbour and in Sweden there are many ports with names ending in hamn, such as Oskarshamn, Kårehamn, Torhamn, etc, etc. As Topsham is a port on an estuary it is more likely named from Old Norse rather than Old High German. --Profoundpaul (talk) 17:53, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

You will need a reliable reference first though, before you can add it to the article.Theroadislong (talk) 16:53, 21 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Topsham Society

edit

Moved to Community section per WP:UNDUE - I very much doubt that the Topsham Society is a major part of the town's history up with the English Civil War. Gordonofcartoon (talk) 19:10, 4 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
