Differences

Topographic Abney level is different from Abney level. The photograph provided in article is of abney level as Topographic abney level has two graduated arc instead of one. Achalmeena (talk) 10:47, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

You are correct. After checking (particularly in Reference 3), I have determined that the entire page ought to be named Abney level, since that is the generic type of level described here, while the term topographic Abney level appears to refer to one specific type of Abney level, one with a scale measuring the grade in feet per surveyor's chain (that is, in grade per-66 instead of grade percent). Some topographic Abney level material even refers a grade of one foot per chain as being a grade of one topo, as if that was a widely understood unit of measure. (Aside: What an awful legacy unit of measurement; percent grade is equally applicable in metric or English units, but grade in feet per chain verges on the absurd; I suppose we could do worse by using cubits.) So, I have adjusted the page accordingly, deemphasizing the topographic part of the name. I leave it to someone who knows the art of page renaming to move this page so its primary name is Abney level while topographic Abney level is demoted to a mere redirection. Douglas W. In preparation for the move, I have edited most of the wikilinks to topographic Abney level to refer to Abney level, leaving only one link to the former (not in a talk page), since that was the only one that referred specifically to the topographic variant.
