Note #7 here: https://fraser.stlouisfed.org/title/annual-report-secretary-treasury-state-finances-194/annual-report-secretary-treasury-state-finances-fiscal-year-ended-june-30-1960-5453?start_page=416 and in the charts 2-6 pages preceding is suggesting the United States had a tonnage tax far before Greece created one in 1975, so the Wiki article claiming Greece was the first is probably inaccurate.
